Naish Mana 10' vs PSH 10'6"WAA
« on: July 07, 2010, 06:51:56 PM »
I've been set on picking up a 10'6"WAA for a while now, but then Linter put the bug in my head about the 10' Mana as a possible alternative.  Then DJ stoked that fire some more.  Can I get some more feedback from others who have tried both??  I'm 6'3", 235 lbs and want a board that surfs (turns) well in knee to head high waves.  I don't want a really heavy board (30lbs etc...), but it doesn't have to be featherweight either.  I will also be doing some flatwater lake runs with it and I want the construction to be very durable (like the PSH).   Is the 10' Mana a suitable board?  Anybody have an actual weight for the board?  Please let me know yours thoughts.....Thanks!!

The PSH 10-6 WAA by Boardworks is much less volume.  It is 185 liters and 30" wide.

The 10-0 Naish Mana is 210 liters  and 32" wide, much more stable and surfs fairly well.

If you weigh 235, that is about 107 kilos.  The PSH will give you a 1.73 ratio (185/107) and the Mana will give you a 1.96 ratio (210/107). The lower volume of the PSH will allow you to bury the rail on a bottom turn more than the 32"wide, higher volume Mana.  In small waves, not a big factor, head high yes.   I suggest to beginners a 2 to 1 ratio, experts 1.4 to 1 ratio.  WG

We've got some Manas on the way to our local shop here in RI ... which also sells PSH.  Get your butt up here and see if the shop owner will let you demo em!!!

I'm a big guy (6'2 275#) and in my shop we sell both PSH from Boardworks and Naish. I've ridden both boards they are both nice boards but different The PSH is a bit tippy and isn't as good in small waves or in flatwater. But is a good wave it is a livelier ride. The Mana is more stable and at my size on EC waves it seems to glide better but is not as rail to rail as the PSH. I also like the nose ridding of the Mana.

So in short from my perspective although the PSH 10'6 is a REAL nice board for our waves I give a "slight" edge to the Naish Mana

I'm almost exactly your size 6'3" 230 and own the PSH 10'6" WAA.  I have ridden the board as heavy 255 plus a wetsuit and found the board to be plenty stable.  I haven't been on the Mana, but after looking at them in person it seems like a much bigger board.  I bought my WAA after owning a 12' Starboard.  I kept the Starboard thinking I would ride it in knee to thigh stuff and reserve the WAA for waist high and above.  WRONG I've only surfed the 12' once in the last 9 months and that was because the WAA was in the shop.  I'm not someone that only surfs perfect days.  I'm frequently out on the sloppy onshore days and the WAA is plenty stable.

Sorry, but I don't have an actual weight of the board.  I don't notice it being overly heavy though.  Let me know if you have any questions.  I'm a big fan of the 10'6", but I've heard a lot of good reviews of the Mana as well.

JimK,

Could you clarify that you are a PSH dealer?  Did not see the shop on the Boardworks website nor from the local rep?  Just wondering.

Just weighed my 10' Mana (holding it while on my bathroom scale several times), comes in around 30.5 lbs with leash hanging off onto the ground and with those clear tape rail-saver thingies installed. I'd say its accurate to about +/- 1 or 2 lbs.....
I haven't had mine out in the surf very much(just  a few times), been camping, but i like it alot. I'm 5'11" and 210. I feel it is a great starter board for me in the ocean. I have room to grow with it, so i'm happy. I was impressed with how it paddled on the lake i just went to with it.  I took all my family one at a time out on it and they all thought it was great fun. Total weight at one point was about 310-315. and it managed! HOWEVER, i can't compare it to any other brands (the only other board i was able to rent before purchase was a no-name brand/shape), so can't really help you on the deciding factor plus i'm a total newb with little overall experience! But i do know that i like the board!
have fun!

mrpete,

Cool,  thanks for the info.  That ratio would be 1.49, which is totally in the range of reality for 310 (141kg) pounds to float.

To arrive at the ratio, divide liters by kilos,  210/141 = 1.49.  This ratio is low, but would work good on a glassy lake.  Or the 1.49 works for an advanced surfer in waves who weighed 310 pounds.  The 32" width really helps the stability too.   WG

WG makes a good argument, but simplifies it a little. A shorter board can also be easier to turn because it is shorter...rail shape will also affect how easy it is to set a rail...fins and fin placement..weight...tail shape...speed...there are a lot of factors involved.

I have not ridden those two boards, but find it is usually easier to turn shorter boards...even if the volume is higher. It might not be as pronounced on boards that are closer in size...

2 different boards with two different missions
below head high/choppy= Mana
get serious = PSH

I could have them both
I wish I did
Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps

I'm 6'2" 210lbs &  I have a 10'6" WAA and it rips! It's the most versatile board I've ever ridden...And yes, I've ridden the Mana. The PSH is like the SUV of SUPs, go anywhere, surf anything!

I've had people who have never ridden a board, hope right up and go on the PSH and then I've ridden it in well overhead surf. Whether hanging over the nose, 360s or bucket throwing cutbacks, the WAA does it all. If I could on have one board, it would be the WAA. I love swapping fins on it, too.

Interesting question.  I am looking for a new Surf SUP too, as I gave my C4 to my oldest son.  As I ask around everyone I have asked, from the guys at Paddle Surf Warehouse, to Blueline, to even Stater Trout, all recommend PSH.  My local dealer, who sold me the C4 has now become a convert too.  He switched from a 9'6 SubVector, to a 10'6WAA.  Said it paddles better, surf better, catches more waves, etc.  The guy at Blueline said He sells both and some people prefer the Naish, mainly because they are more familiar with Robby from Windsurfing, but he really believes the PSH is a better board.  I have not ridden either board, this is all just opinions I am getting asking the same questions you are asking.  Not sure if this helps or not.
