Chicama SUP Trip
« on: June 13, 2010, 11:13:59 AM »
A perfect wave for the paddle board. I shortboarded for two waves and went right back to the SubVector. 6 Days and lost 5 lbs. A great trip.

Chicama Peru?  Love the waves.  Lined up perfectly.  You scored big.

How are the rodes after the earth quake?

I stayed at the Chicama Surf Resort. With some swell the wave turns on with a dropping tide and comes together perfectly. The stand up board holds the peak while the regular surfers drift a bit. It does get crowded with a good weekend swell, but after one good long ride you will pretty mellowed out. This shot was taken right before going out from the resort.

My father in law paid for the trip. I believe it came out to a grand a person for the week or less. Including a trip to Huanachoco (for bigger surf and Inca ruins), boat rides back to the point three square meals and alcohol.

You must take a flight from Lima the capital to Truilla ( 1 hour) and drive an hour to the resort. The airport is where Huanachoco beach is located! Chicama is located in Malabrigo (go to Malabrigoleft.blogspot.com) The area is safe and the resort is a fortress. You come out of the water and ring a bell to the door, they take your board and they have big locker room to shower and change. Afterwards they take your wetsuit and hang it up for you. ( I could of paddled without the wetsuit, the air is a dry 75 degrees F)

We traveled with a 10' SubVector, 9'3" SubVector and my 6' shortboard. We took Delta from Atlanta to Lima($100/board each way) and LAN from Lima to Truhillo(no board charge).

By the way, Lima has tons of surf for everyone! The picture below is Penascal in San Bartola.

your father in law paid, wow you married well!

another great photo.  It sounds and looks like an amazing country and great surf trip.

question, the connecting LAN flight, no issue getting a SUP onboard?  I am guessing it's a large plane and not smaller type?

Yeah, it was a good size plane. They treated our boards like normal luggage. We had 11'5" board bags folded over to fit the 10' boards. It looked huge. When checking in at Atlanta we called them surfboards not paddle boards. We also flew 1st class from the U.S.

Reviving this thread because I'd like to go to Chicama. My main concern is the jumper flight from Lima to there and bringing a SUP.

Has anyone been recently?
