12'6 race board for heavy (ish) person
« on: June 11, 2010, 12:04:20 PM »
I am looking to buy 12'6 race board and I am looking for some suggestions. I weigh 215lbs (97kg) and will be paddling on flat water.   I have been looking at the Starboard Free Race 29" and the  31"but to be honest because I cannot easily test most of the  boards that are out I am hoping that someone might have some suggestions or advise.

I've seen comments on this board that the 29" race tour is for less than 180lbs
For me at 200 lbs i am going for a 14' race board

I just did a write up on the FreRace, Pin & K15.  Nothing extensive, but it may help you since I'm 245.  The FreeRace will float you fine. http://www.socalpaddleboard.com/equipmemnt/reviews/starboard-free-race-pin-k15-first-impressions/

The Starboard Free Race is an awesome board for flat water.
The 31" version is super stable - we have had absolute beginners on this board and they loved it.

The 29" version is a little tippy'er - but is not really any faster for me (I am 200 lbs - and normally paddle a Starboard NEW 25")

If you can demo them - go for it.
Where are you located?

I have both the Pin and Free Race at our Lake on Atascadero (California) and you are welcome to try them out.  Also, both of them are USCA legal for the the stock class.

Get a 14 foot board. If you want to race ( and not just participate) a 12'6" is too small. You will be at too much of a disadvantage against the lighter racers.
Ideally, go Unlimited, but if storage is an issue, a 14 ft board is a heavyweight stock board.

I paddled a freerace 29 today. I guess it would be competitive, but it felt like I was paddling through Mayo. I probably shouldn't step off my F18 after a 4.5 mile race and try a 12'6". No way it's gonna feel good.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.
