Kaupo down wind run
« on: May 05, 2010, 09:58:38 PM »
Has anyone done this run ??  Looks pretty challenging. Having to hike down cliffs like Ulua fisherman !!!!  This video is of a  stand up run from Kaupo to LaPeruse on Maui. Featuring Kai Lenny, Michi Schwieger, Robby Naish and Dave Kalama. Looks like FUN !!

I've done a shorter version of it, the wind can be very, very good.

It is out in the wilderness, with virtually no civilization in sight, very beautiful.

The commute from the finish to the start is very long.  A paved road is almost 60 miles.

Even with a key to access the dirt road across the ranch, it's a long drive with a lot of climbing.

Very beautiful country out there.  Amazing reefs.  Pristine beaches without a footprint.

Very difficult to access and I hope it stays that way.

I did some fishing on that side of the Island with my Dad by boat and on land when I was young. We lived in Kihei back in the 60's . My Dad was a manager for Shell Oil. It was an awesome time to live in Kihei nothing but Kiawe and some houses by the beach and nothing much else.  When I saw this video of the terrane it brought back a lot of memories when I was young. I'm with you , I hope this part of maui stays pristine. Do you know if the Baldwins own that ranch ???

a few years back, i had asked about the Kaupo run on this forum. at the time no one had done it and some people said it was not a viable option due to impossible access, very sharky water, shifting winds etc...
interesting to see it's now been tried.

Pardee Erdman bought the Ulupalakua ranch from the Baldwins in '63.

He just donated 11,000 acres to a trust that prevents development.

A gate went up at LaPerouse about 2 years ago to stem the flow of trucks.  Fishermen can still get a key.  Amazing place...

I remember that thread.

Access is not impossible, but like I said it's difficult.

The wind is not shifty out there.  East trades blow VERY strong and consistent.  Kaupo is on the alenuihaha channel for goodness sake...

I found that thread and read the responses. Seemed like some people knew all about that coast but did not seem to think it was doable standing up or without escort boat.....  Hmm ? but they did it with a kayak ?

Thanks for the up date on what happened to the land. My mom went to school and grew up with the Baldwins (Johny). I aked her how we got out there last night and she said that it was the Baldwins and we had access. I was young but vaguely remembered that it was theirs. BEAUTIFUL country !!! Would love to go out there again... MAN I MISS MAUI !!!

Drop a line if you are coming out this way.

LaPerouse and points south are a big favorite of mine.  I have extra boards and plenty of time on that water.

Before I discovered the magic of maliko, I would launch from LaPerouse every weekend, head south on my F-16 until the wind picked up, then head back.  You can get pretty far if you leave at O dark thirty.  The sunrise is amazing,  Big island is so beautiful.  The wind line is very predictable, it just moves in as the day progresses.  by 10 or 11 the whitecaps move right in close to shore and zoom you back to LaPerouse.  There are tour boats and fishermen along the coast to flag down if you get in trouble, and I carry a phone.

I worked on the last house at LaPerouse bay for years and swam at lunch every day.  Wish I knew about standup or oc-1 back then...   Amazing water when you get away from civilization.  Golf courses and civilization do a number on the reefs here on Maui.
