Maui to Molokai Sarento's Kai Wa'a race
« on: April 23, 2010, 06:51:50 PM »
Good luck to everyone doing the race tomorrow... Maui paddlers - Jack and Livio solo, Talia in Canoe.  Dane and T as a team.  Devin and Chan as a team.  Randy and  Mike  in OC1.  Dave paddling 2 man with Junya,  Mark and Jeremy as a team, and the Aussies Dave and Jon solo as well... I'm sure there are more Maui folks but thats who I heard so far from Randy this morning..  23 miles between 2 islands.. Cant wait to see the pics and hear the stories...   Next year I should be strong enough..

On a more serious note, good luck to everyone. A channel crossing is on my to-do list.  :)
I wonder what Mark and Jeremy will be paddling - F16v2, F18 custom, ...?

And a special go gettam to the Aussies (and any Southern Africans) giving it a go.

sounds like an interesting race. where does it start and where does it end ?
looking at south west Molokai on Google earth, i would imagine that there would be some good downwind potential on the stretch of coast around Waialua. has anyone tried those waters out ?

This forecast map is great.  It gives forecasted winds and directions over time for this area.

Here is the course (the start and end - what route you take can make a big difference):

Personally, I havn't done that stretch of coastline - but a friend at work was raised on Molokai and has a lot of OC experience.  He says that the glides are exceptional.

Ekolu Kalama told me once that the downwind runs on Molokai are the best in the islands.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.
