i want to go downwinding in hawaii
« on: February 01, 2010, 09:49:05 AM »
hi guys - looking for some help please

i am from the UK and making my first trip to hawaii (oahu and maui)
to paddlesurf (i am pretty experienced) but would really like to
try a downwinder as its not something that is really possible in the UK

i will only have a paddlesurfboard with me and in any case
even with the right board and kit its not something i would attempt
on my own as a first timer on unfamiliar waters

is there a club or group on either island who arrange trips for
visitors ?

cheers

Drop a note when you are on Maui.  We will be pleased to take you with us and find some great gear for you to use.  When are you here?

Oh, it's not that bad... Just bring a life vest. And a cell phone. And maybe some emergency food and water. Flares would be nice. And your passport, You need that for entering Tahitian territorial waters.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Don't forget to do your training, like holding your breath while carrying heavy underwater boulders in 20+ feet of water. You know..in case you fall off once or twice.

That's a nice trip!  With a three week window, you are pretty sure to get a few good runs, even if this light wind pattern continues.

See ya soon.

why cant you do it in the uk???

i often do selsey bill to littlehampton downwinders. In a sw wind above a force 4 there are plenty of waves to catch. if the wind is more westerly then pagham to brighton is easily possible. As south west or westerlys are our most common wind downwinders are easy.
may not be quite as warm though ;D

Ah, so you're here. I didn't go yesterday--had a wife day. Got to do that every now and then. Wind looks sucko until Tuesday, but you never know. The long range forecasts miraculously change to fit reality.

Should be good surfing today, probably all day. 5-8 feet on the north shore and 5mph wind.
