sup..
« on: July 23, 2007, 07:41:31 AM »
Is it just me or does anyone else feel the Royal Cultural begining of Stand Up Paddle Surfing deserves a better abreviation then sup?!! or suping and, the boards which are highly floatable need to be called subs?   Sup, just sounds a little too hip-hop ( not that there is anything wrong with it )....

Yes, the name SUP makes me cringe.  I hadn't considered the hip hop factor, but The Notorious SUP could be problematic.

I'll cast my votes for plain old "Stand Up" and "Board".  Stand Up Paddle Surfing is a huge mouthful, Beach Boy Surfing is a bit limited (and not as fitting on a lake in Utah), Paddle Surfing would have been nice, but, uhh, taken.

Right, I think if the words.." Stand Up " were used instead of sup, as a way to describe the sport, it would not get confused with paddle surfing...example: Phil and Dewey went standup the whole day and pissed off all the paddle surfers cause' they couldn't catch a wave......When Laird paddled out at Malibu that day, he did it entirely standup!.....

To me, the sport has always been "stand up paddle surfing". That's how I name to sport to everyone else. It's only a few words and even when I tell them to someone who knows nothing about surfing or water sports, more often than not, they know what sport I'm talking about because they saw it on tv or in a magazine or something. (In the case of SUP, I only use it in writing and read it as  "S" "U" "P" for Stand Up Paddle. ).

I have a bigger problem with the materials associated with "SUP". Carbon fiber and epoxy rob the soul out of the sport. We should all be on 16' solid koa Olo's and never wear leashes... ;D

Or I guess we could just go with it. I still dont know what to call it, besides the most fun I have had since I learned to telemark ski.

Maybe we should call it "the amazing flying monkey ohana tribe slide"...

ohhhhh, that does have a certain ring to it.

Hmmm… So it appears our paddling ancestors were warriors, not pacifists as was originally thought.  Good thing we are have evolved.  Nice illustration, thanks for posting it.

Agreed, the SUP acronym has no soul.  I prefer to say "stand up" but perhaps Ku Ku Hoe gets back to the roots of the sport.

When talking about it I usually say "Stand Up Paddle".   When writing its SUP just because its a long phrase to keep writing out.   In the beginning people were calling the boards  SUB's for "Stand Up Boards" but that descibes just about all boards...

No right or wrong I guess...
