Any have any SUP-type smartphone apps?
« on: October 21, 2009, 09:23:20 AM »
i just got a smartphone -- a motorola q9c with windows mobile on it -- and wondered it anybody has found any useful surf-related apps for these things.  i'm thinking of surf reports or tide tables or hourly wind predictions, stuff like that.

anything out there?

Check out Swellinfo.  Get it on my iphone, not sure about other platforms.

The Magic Sea Weed app for iPhone is decent.  Not sure if they have a Windows based version though.

Swellinfo, Tide Graph, and NOAA Buoy Data are the 3 apps I use most often.  I'm not sure which ones are the best GPS apps, perhaps folks like Ponobill can recommend one of these.

Thanks for the suggestions Gary - they look really useful. I have Surf Report, but I don't think it's nearly as good as the ones you mentioned.

Hawaii residents using NOAA Buoy Data should go into settings and change their distance preferences to 500 miles.  This will allow you to see all the buoys that surround the state.

@Deb: Good seeing you the other day.  Hope you got out and had a great session on that rockin' new board!

Aloha,

Gary

You bought the wrong phone dude. Everytrail, fitbuilder, evernote, running map, windguru and Magicseaweed are all worth the price of the phone. Not to mention a kindle reader for books, and the google maps application. I use the ipod and podcast capabilities every day, as well as the clean integration between iphone and my computer for syncing email, calendar, contacts and all my notes.

I honestly don't know how I got along before iPhone.

I agree. Sorry about the motorola. I don't know what I did before my iPhone. Return it if it's been less than 30 days.

Yes, the iPhone is amazing.

And Apple is about to drop another device on the market: the iTablet

Yeah the iPhone is amazing.  I am a newbie but I always bring it with me in a dry pouch if something happens.  It can be a life saver with GPS.  You can always tweet your GPS coordinates for a rescue.  Also geotagging is really nice.

the biggest flaw in the iPhone story is that it's still just AT&T and their service kind of sucks. Not bad, just not great. Verison is supposed to get it "real soon now" but it's been a long time waiting.  Apple has been pretty tight-assed about the phone, shutting down jailbroken phones when they can. But as the healthy used iPhone market demonstrates, there's lots of ways around all that. Used iPhone 3G's sell for about $300. the buyers jailbreak them and use them wherever they want.
