Great to see how people are using their paddles as a brace when cross stepping and nose riding. I've wanted to learn to nose ride for years now, and every summer I tell myself that this is going to be the summer I take some risks and start cross stepping. Now that I'm riding a SUP I thought it would be easier to learn, but so far not. Lesson learned, use the damn paddle more.

My friend just got a Jimmy Lewis noserider ("black & blue"?), beautiful board, classic tail rocker and 50/50 rails and big single fin. Now I just have to start being willing to sacrifice a few sessions to heinous clumsy wipeouts.

antonie delapro is freaking awesome but his riding style is way advanced, imo.  he doesn't do a lot of bracing w/ his paddle while walking, for one thing.

@Marc996

Excellent video. Nice nose riding and his 360's are really nice. He has a very good technique between his footwork and the way he uses his paddle.

Thanks for sharing this video.

Zoo..... for what it's worth:
I find it is easiest to get to the nose on the way up the wave.
As you come off the bottom, climbing UP the face, start walking.
When you get high on the wall, "lock" the board in the wave by giving a little ankle tilt toward the beach.... not enough to slid down the face.... just enough to set the nose on the wave while the whitewater buries the tail.

When going up the face, the board has a lot of lift and running to the nose will be much easier.
Sliding down the face, the board is in release mode and it's easy to bury the nose.

crap pics... but they sort of show what I describe  :)

Many of you have seen this guy from Japan - great instructor on many facets of surf.

"Noseriding is EASY.  You just need to walk forward. From little baby time, we learned to walk."..he says. See his 16 July entry.

ramrod, the guy who runs the site, has been an online buddy of mine for years now.  he's terrific.  and super helpful.  these days, he tends to hang out at this site: http://www.surfing-waves.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=15 where he goes by the handle of waikikikichan.  at his own site, much of the gold is hidden away in old posts, so a few years ago, i copy/pasted some of it into a blog for EZ reference:  index is in the right hand column. http://nutsfornoseriding.blogspot.com/2014/02/best-of.html  sadly, none of this has made me any better at noseriding. sheeeeeit!

that little blog also has some stuff i collected from the Gong guys, who are also greatly helpful, as well as some other noseriding odds and ends from hither and yon.

if you're into trad-style surfing, here's the best i've seen when translated to a sup.  best rider starts ten seconds in.  it's small wave stuff but so graceful and so classy and so effortless looking.  and man do i dig those frontside cross-leg drop-knee turns!

This guy is hanging five more than I've seen on a SUP - 10 foot.
Could be the board or could be the surfer (and/or the fin)
or both (or all three):

Jimmy Lewis Black & Blue Noserider 10'1"x31"x4.25," 164 liters, 24 lbs, 1 box
Pearson Laird Surftech Longboard 10'6"x23"x29.75"x18"x4.375," 154 liters, 24 lbs, 3 boxes

I remember seeing these pointers a couple of years ago.  It was all Greek, I had no way to relate and understood none of these illustrated principles.  Now, I understand all of them easily.

I've seen this video a few times when first researching sups. I liked his "hang 5" move since I hadn't seen this type of "hang" before.
