fins for sailing a 10 foot sup
« on: October 04, 2009, 03:29:58 PM »
Just got a mast track installed in a PSH board and am wondering what the best fin arrangment might be for sailing it.  It is a tri fin set up.  Take the side fins out and sail it as a single or keep them in?  My center fin i think is an 8 inch hawaiian designs.  I do have a wave fin for windsurfing as well but it is a pretty small fin too made for an 8'4" naish wave board.

It depends on your sail size..With 6 or 7 meters..the biggest uprightest pointer fin you can find.. as far forward as it will go in the box will help you stay upwind..in breeze a wave or surf fin 9.5 " to 10"
Smaller the sail, smaller the fin..
sometimes you can change fins instead of sail size.
Where do you sail?

will be used mostly w/ a 4.7 or 5.3 in sub planing conditions for light days on the southern oregon coast.  may also take it out on lakes occasionally.

I like a big fin shoved forward for most sailing--my favorite is a big Wingnut, I'd guess it's at least 9". If you get into chop or waves the sidebites are nice. they seem to stabilize the board in chop and let you carve a little on a wave.

Honestly though, it's all good. I sailed my 12'2" without a fin on a lake a couple of years ago--it wasn't bad.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.
