Hypoxic training?
« on: September 10, 2009, 09:18:07 PM »
It's not like I'll ever ride monster waves, but I still like to be prepared to hold my breath for set waves coming through that hold you down for some time.  We used to do hypoxic training when I was on swim teams but when i swim alone I always have the thoght that I may pass out then pass away if i'm holding my breath for too long, etc.  Recently I started holding my breath while jogging some (not sure if passing out on the pavement and hitting your head and dying is any better than in the water?)  I was amazed that at a slow jog, 20 seconds was almost the max i could go w/o extreme discomfort.

Any training gurus out there on the benifits (if any) of hypoxic training and perhaps the dangers as well?

im no guru, but the benefits of holding your breath cant be good. if anything, you are better off breathing deeply in and exhale completely out. "more oxygen, more life, less oxygen, less life" wise person once said. half of the people out there breathe from the top part of your lungs, so you waste half a breathe every breath you take. watch a small baby, or child, they breathe fromt thier abdomen. adullts breathe from their chest. when you are out during a huge session, my advise would be, breathe correctly, full breaths in & out, fill the bottom part of your lungs, then the top. this way your body stores more oxygen for that crucial hold down you're talking about.

Another vote for apnea... You may add to that some yoga... Recently I started doing yoga and I can already feel the benefits of better breathing as well as full filling my lounges from bottom to top... In Yoga breathing is everything...

Add to that it´s a great workaout too!! If you give it a little thought, you´ll figure Gerry Lopez, Dick Brewer, Laird Hamilton, among others, are into Yoga for some reason...

My mind and body have changed for the better... And of course I´m stoked: Every tuesday and thursday I´m taking personal Yoga classes early in the morning, right there in the beach, and then shortboard classes to improve my surfing skills (been surfing longboards but gave up the shortboards over ten years ago).

No, I´m not as pro training for some tounament. Just decided to find some time to treat my body with some more respect and enjoy the broaden dimensions sup brought back to my life.

Mahalo do Brazil,
Bob.

I hope your joking SD. Some folks might not understand that. Not a good idea to do something that can potentially cause you to black out while driving.

Similar thread here...http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=2982.0 . I'm also up to about 2 minutes whille walking or paddling. 2.5 while at rest watching TV.

Not quite sure if this is the same thing but you could enlist the help of a very sharp citrus fruit, a long leather bootlace, the coathook on the back of a hotel door and the services of a Tory MP and a very understanding wife. Just a thought !  ;)

I actually do practice breath holding in my car, and I do use distance traveled as my marker. But I always wear a leash.

It makes my wife totally nuts. I told her if I pass out she should grab the wheel. Doesn't seem to mollify her.  On a positive note I only do it in Maui. Between the gawking tourists and the locals on their cellphones I don't think one unconscious geezer adds much to the danger.
