fishing
« on: November 08, 2007, 09:58:22 AM »
ok just got my 11'6 SouthPoint and love.  Have paddle a lot of flat water to get used to it and surfed small barbers point and hau bush and am hooked.  I was wondering how much of a performance hindrance it would be if I  rigged a milk crate onto my board with a bungy cord to haul some light fishing gear around.  I've found some fun looking fishing grounds that I would like to take advantage of.

check boardfisher.com. the guys a swamis local and is always on it. Ive got one and it works great. If you dont want the clamp, just get the kit and put it on with the flat black bungees. works great for paddies too.

I think if you're planning a fishing trip you wont need to worry too much about performance. I'm planning on the milkcrate for next season but I plan to use a ratchet strap. Flat profile and it should hug the board pretty tight. I've also been thinking about drilling and epoxying hardpoints but have been too chicken.

The boardfisher looks pretty cool. I was thinking something along those lines for mounting outriggers for a more stable fishing platform.

come on, bob, haul out that drill and fire it up.  i did it on my jimmy and once you've cut that first hole, the next ones aren't half as frightening.  my new starboard is due to arrive today, and i'm sure i'll be drilling before too long.

Thanks for the help.  The boardfisher looks just like the idea that I had for my board.  Going to rig in up and try it out next week

Got back from Baja about three weeks ago used the milk crate on my s.o.s. blue  used straps to put it on it's kind of funky should have used the inserts that were on the board. Made some rod holders out of pvc pipe zip, tie them to the crate and go fish! Got two of the biggest bass I have ever caught and a nice Halibut. Lots of fish tacos for all.

I've done a fair amount of kayak fishing and am thinking about trying it on my SUP. One question though, when you hook a larger fish, do you guys fight it standing up or sitting down?
I've caught several yellow tail on my kayak and it seems that when the fish get over 12 lbs, they tow you around quite a bit. I'd guess if I was standing, I'd soon be swimming.
So, what's the secret?

I ususally make it a goal to try to not touch the board until I get the fish landed.  It's a blast.  You can usually sit down real quick before taking a swim if things get unruly!

I have a dream of hooking up to a 400 lb bluefin. I'm a decent waterskiier (at least I used to be) and it just seems like it would be a blast. Lots of ahi for all.... ;D

Saw your post on these and checked out their site. I could be really interested in something like this, can't quite make up my mind if it is a go'er or a gonna! The shorter rod certainly makes sense for travel though. I can see one going to Costa Rica with me and the ULI. Perhaps the heavier build  Lopez  might be a safer bet for fishing, what do you think?

i hate to admit it almost but uh i've got one of these.  in my defense, i'm going to have to say that it was given to me for business; but yeah, uhhuh, it's sitting in the back of my car.  a couple of things: it casts fine but, after that, hook a fish and you're just horsing it in with no play.  it's just not real fun, the way it is with a rod, with all that bend and action.  plus, well, if you show up at the pier with it, believe me, all the old liars are going to be snickering and guffawing ... not that that bothers are hardy individualist like me!

meanwhile, also check out compactfishinggear.com.  might be a better option.
