How do you say Stand up in Hawaiian?
« on: May 06, 2009, 05:33:25 AM »
I am making some stand up clocks and I want to put stand up in Hawaiian on them. I want to get it right so I don't look like a total kook.
From what I could find it looks like KU(with dash over the U) LUNA
Please help this Haole. ???

Lots of ways, depends on what your intent is for reference. I don't know of a word directly relating to surfboard. According to my Hawaiian dictionary the closest is probably Ku Nalu, which roughly means standing on a wave or standing on surf. That's why Mark Raaphost used the name for his first SUP board. Mark is a student of the Hawaiian language.

If you wanted to say upright you might say Na'au pono, but that has moral connotations. Still, I like the sound of Na'au Pono Nalu
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Thanks Bill!!!
Ku Nalu would work well on my clocks. I carved two yesterday and just put Nalu on them. The next ones I make will have Ku Nalu on them.  I will post some pic's when they are done. They come with a nice little wood paddle and leash.
The sun finaly came out yesterday(first time in a week hear on Cape Cod) and I had a nice late day session at Nauset Beach no hood no gloves and some nice waist high peeky waves. ;D

Ku Hoe would also work.

Ku - stand/upright
Hoe - paddle

Proper Hawaiian:

E ku i luna a hoe   (Stand up and paddle)
