Cape Cod Bay Challenge 2009 Training Diary's
« on: April 28, 2009, 04:31:28 PM »
Like last year I'd like to start keeping a training diary to help motivate everyone to work hard so we can be ready for the crossing. Nobody wants to bonk at mile 20.

One of the things ECSup and I decided on early last year was that all participants in the challenge would need to agree to a commitment of training. We don’t want to spoil the fun….and that’s exactly why we want everyone be ready. We're starting a bit later this year so the training schedule will need to be compressed, especially for those of you doing this for the 1st time. One good thing, the days are warmer and longer. Workouts are a lot easier without worrying about a wetsuit.  We have a little over 3 months left to prepare. the time is going to go by quickly. I don't think any of us wants to be the one to climb into one of the support boats at the 3/4 mark.

What I’d like to propose is that we all keep a running diary. Just a quick post here on the time, distance, type of workout, and conditions. A little something to push each other to get out and do some extra distance each week. This is going to be a long haul. 28 miles doesn't come easy. While I was pleasantly surprised that last years paddle went by without problems I know that wouldn't have happened if I hadn't prepared myself.

Like last year my plan is to paddle distance at least 2-3 times per week with a gradual increase in distance each week with a 20 or so mile paddle a couple weeks ahead of our crossing. Surfing counts for workouts too! I let myself slip a bit since last years event. I'm using this training as motivation to get in shape. I'm going to need every bit of the time available to get my weight down, muscle built, and stamina maxed.

Proper nutrition and hydration, especially in the weeks just prior to the challenge will be important too. (No wine for you this year Mike.... ;))

Like last year...We also would like our fellow zoners to chime in with words of encouragement...or maybe some trash talk just to keep it honest... .

If you're interested in joining us let me know. Big Party... ;D

Tuesday April 28th 2.99 miles, 18 -20 mph winds.   Mostly downwind.  About 45 minutes.
Going to do 2 -3 sessions a week with a long run each weekend like marathon training.
Great day yesterday with 80 degree weather & no wetsuit!

Gotta pick up the pace here a bit. Busy week kept me off the water until Saturdays surf session and even that was just 2.5 hours.

2 hours of surfing some mushy thigh-waist high waves. 1/2 hour of flailing on my 10-6...  >:(

I planned to do a 22 mile downwinder today--from the Dalles to Hood River. Planned on no wind, and so of course there was--right in the face (Hey Randy and Randy, don't you just hate that  ;) ). wound up doing a 7 mile out and back. Last two miles upriver against the 3 knot current with no wind to help.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Have you heard whether Peyote made it into Monterrey? Does this mean you might be coming out for the CCBC?

1 Hour on Friday, 30 mins surfing on Sat & 1 hour on Sunday.  My plan is to add 30 minutes to the paddle route every weekend = 8 hours by August 15th.  Stone: you are already getting lots of attention on the south shore (MA) for the race!

Ok, this weekend is going to be the start of my trainning.  May be I'll even start this Friday since its my birthday and I probably won't want to be bobbing around on the ocean on Saturday  ;)

If I can get out on a consistent basis and build up some mileage, then I think I can be ready by mid August.  Simple plan, make the commitment and just do it!

Glad to hear the word is getting around Craig...just make sure you tell folks its not a race. One of the things that I really enjoyed about this last year was the fact that we stayed together and stepped ashore as a group. This is a team effort to raise money to help kids. That's what we want to stress.

Alright Bill...happy to have you join in. Going to be a fun crew again this year.

Bob - Are you paddling mostly by yourself for training or are you able to hook up with other paddlers?  There are always lots of guys surfing here, not many distance paddlers at the local break for me. Most of my training runs are shorter runs repeated multiple times.
We are planning to come out, just trying to figure out the plan at work, my schedule seems to be set in jello.  As we  like to say, semper gumby - always flexible!
Is there a shop that has rental boards out there? I almost hate to think about shipping/airline costs for the 11'6" to MA!
