It's funny that a lot of people think the rudder is for steering. The rudder is for speed--to put you where you need to be on the wave quicker than you can get there with foot steering. the masters, Like Jeremy and Dave K, play it like a piano.

The trim statement made a lot come together in my head just now. You're trying not to fall off the back of the wave and so you want to stay up front. Your rudder is a way to keep the board headed the right direction without stepping back out of trim. Never thought of it that way I'd alway assumed it was just due to the crazy length.
