Things got interesting in Costa
« on: February 25, 2017, 11:00:49 AM »
It was a challenging trip this year. We were there from 1/26-2/12. It started out smooth sailing w/just me and my wife. About half way into the trip I messaged an old surfing buddy of mine via facebook an invite to come down and w/in hrs he had his flight booked! I picked him up the next day at the airport and gave him a crash course on the ins and outs of Costa Rica. Things got interesting once he joined us.
Snakes, bats, scorpions, centipedes, illness, airline problems, sharks, theft, miles and miles of dry dusty rock strewn dirt roads, crowded lineups, and flat tires all seem to fade away when you're having a blast laughing it up in good company.
Just remember, do NOT leave valuables in your car unattended!

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Never heard or seen issues down there with the sharks except for a hammerhead near witches rock. That looks cool. What was the story with that.

Nice pics. You're a real travel hound.

It's funny how paradise can have a flip side. Logical but always disturbing.

ninja tuna, Night Wing, SUPJorge, SurfinJ, Creek, fanman, and paddleOn...thanx all for checkin' in. CR was quite a hurdle this yr. Encountered quite a bit.
Never heard or seen issues down there with the sharks except for a hammerhead near witches rock. That looks cool. What was the story with that.
There were thick schools of bait fish, which I was told were sardines, populating the breaks towards the end of the trip. The day before I shot those underwaters I was at a spot about an hour to the north and there were alot there too.  Also those bigger fish that were feeding on the bait were present.  I was told those were "Skip Jack", a kind of tuna like fish. I was def leary of a shark sighting as there had been several sightings earlier in the week and was told they were bull sharks. On sup I was probably at about a 50% fear level. Only fell in a coupla times. I woulda freaked if I'd seen one. It was really cool when I was paddling out and saw about five skip jack swim rapidly in the wave as it walled up getting ready to unload on the reef. That woulda made an amazing shot the water and the wave was so clean.
Nice looking group!
Thanx, my wife will enjoy hearing that.
what board did you bring/need? im thinking to bring my small pro, but wondering if a larger board would be better.

I was on the fence whether to bring my 127ltr Assassin or the 116ltr V-Box. The Assassin is def easier for me to stand on, paddle, and catch waves but the V handles WAY easier. It's def not easy traveling w/a sup. I went w/the V mostly because it's light, thinner, and not as fat. Much easier to lug around than the Assassin. One thing that had me challenged was when the offshores kicked in at around 25mph. I was still able to catch plenty of waves but it was sure tough! That board is super light and the squared off nose is not very kind into the wind. Also brought my 6'6" quad fish which has made every trip down there w/me since about 2012. It fit right in the travel bag nicely w/the V.

Dude shot these from under the palms and emailed em to me. A really good day I had in CR. January 2012

Tons of pics Cookie!  You're lucky, that area would have been a bit remote for my wife.  And I would have thought you'd be the only one in the lineup?

Creek shares Cape Cod with a herd of GWs, but the mention of Bull Sharks is spooky. I gather they are the Russian Mobsters of the sea, opportunists lurking in areas where humans are rather than concentrating on Seals and dangerous as Fuc.

Glad you had a good time... hope you had some Beans & Rice. (I could live on that)  Jim
