Kalama / Naish Stuff
« on: February 07, 2009, 03:09:41 PM »
Dave Kalama has been out absolutely killing here it on a smaller board recently, just gouging the crap out of waves in a way that is mean looking even for him.  I was way stoked to switch off and get to spend a half hour on that board today.  Thing is unreal, even with me on it.  Very quick rail to rail, projects fast down the line, and digs hard at the bottom to set it up.  The Naish faithful have a lot to look forward to, and not long to wait.  If you have already tried the other Naish short boards, this one is a way different beast, with Dave's input all over it.  It has been prototyped extensively, and that shows.  The one I rode was the second to final (the final one was sent in to make the production model).

Add this one to the rip list.  Cool times.

Is it the new 10'6" or the new 9'6" thruster?... It sounds great.

This is the 9'6.  It's 27 3/4 by a bit over 4 thick.  It is a true thruster, trim rounded pin, with a moderately pulled in nose.

This is a big departure for Naish (and most other production boards in this size rage) in that it comes in under 28 wide, and stays pretty thin and narrow through the nose and tail.  At my size (185) it stays balanced and very managable for wave-waiting and it paddles fast

The only change in the final over the one I got to try is that they trimmed the thickness a bit.  Rocker and outine was already dialed in by this version.

There is also a smaller and a bigger one on the way.

Naish had till recently still a fairly conservative range. but he seems to have kicked into high gear with Kalama on board. between the comming 17' and 18' speed machines and the little thrusters, it's really good to see them bringing out progressive stuff.

Does anyone know if they plan on something other than yellow for these new boards?

With all these new hot shapes, all we need are hot colors now.

Is the thruster setup a 2+1 or all FCS?

Regular thruster 3 FCS (or Futures) on this one.   Not sure about the production one, but I would guess the same.

Are there new tidbits out there on upcoming Naish downwind boards?

From the sounds of things back then, about now would be right, but I have no details on that.  These models were already in the production process back in early Feb.

Is there any updates on these?  The web has been extremely quiet wrt any new developments.

I'm shedding my current gear and am on the prowl for new - this would be awesome...

Pictures of the 9'6" are starting to emerge...

The trip Robby and Dave took to P Pass is producing some pictures.

You can clearly see the round pin and moderately pulled in nose that Rand described.  The board is still yellow.  And it looks really versatile.

One of the kiteboarding magazines currently on the racks also has a still photo.

I still couldn't tell what fin setup it had (FCS, Futures, etc).

I sold both of my surfing SUPs and the two leading candidates for replacement (this new Naish and the 9'6" Surftech Gerry Lopez) aren't out yet.  I really f***ed this summer up...
