Not too far from the disguised beach use fee we pay. California State Parks annual parking pass $ 195. It's a placard we leave hanging from our rear view mirrors. I always say, the day I buy that pass, is "the most expensive surfing day of the year." You can park free along the side of the road and take a long walk to Trestles (with is a state regulated beach), but you can't SUP there. Our city owned beaches don't charge for any use other than parking in some spots. It's swim at your own risk along unguarded beaches, which we have miles of. The cities do have the same 'no fun on the beach allowed' rules though. Can't think of the last time I actually laid on a beach. Not since my kids were little. Now it's board from car to water and back. No messing around!  >:(
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

NJS- SOTF is in all townships on LBI except Harvey Cedars and it appears they have followed suit and started a petition to change that. In HC's defense they have had two large surfing beaches for years now. But sotf is def the way to go.

TallDude- You prob don't remember but I visited Encinitas in Feb 2015 and actually scored a CA state parking pass, aka "hangtag", from the Zoner known as Digger. Quite convenient parking right near the beach access steps at Cardiff. Used it at Torrey. Too bad no sup at Trestles. I'd imagine it would be like trying to sup Swamis. I only paddled through the Swamis lineup from Moonight on my way to Cardiff one day. I like hanging on the beach for short breaks during my sessions. Mostly futsin' w/cams, drinkin' water, eating fruit, and shootin' the bull w/others. Def need the badge and it's a small price to pay I feel. Better than the $195 that's for sure. But if I lived in CA I'd prob pony up the 195 to be able to park.

skiffie- I can only speak for the states I've visited as far as paying to use the beach. NY has fees for sure, although I've never tried to srf up there in summer. Off season is free in NY that I do know. All the other states I've visited are free access in summer.

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Had the pleasure of meeting up w/Zoner "NorthJerzSurfer" the other day. We lucked into some nice glassy little surf w/no one out but the two of us. Quite an enjoyable session we shared. Cool meeting Zoners for sure. Seems like you New England Zoners have a larger group who regularly meet up. Mike, it was cool meeting you and I hope you can get to the "baggage check" and unload some weight for another sesh!  ;)
I had the new GoPro Session5 out and it takes great video. These are all screen grabs from the raw files. The raws are too large for upload the res is so good!  8)
