Inflatable Touring SUP Recommendations for 130lb
« on: February 14, 2017, 11:46:36 AM »

I have a family member who has paddled a lot and is considering getting her first board.  She wants to go with an inflatable for storage and transportation reasons.  She's athletic, has great balance (we often SUP on my 24" wide windsurfing boards), ~130lbs.  She'll mostly use it for long days on the lake but will also take to the beach every once in a while.  I don't think she plans on riding waves with it.

Some questions she has are:

Quote
Considering an inflatable SUP - any recommendations on brand or type? Anything else that would be helpful to know before purchasing?

Here are a few I'm considering:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LV9SD5S?psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/Starboard-Touring-Astro-Inflatable-Paddle/dp/B018YG8POO

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I4HLW34?ref_=ams_ad_dp_ttl&th=1

https://www.amazon.com/Tower-Paddle-Boards-Adventurer-Inflatable/dp/B007VP6RA4/ref=sr_1_2?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1487094005&sr=1-2&keywords=tower+paddle+board

The Starboard seems like the best brand and fit, but seems wider and higher volume than she would need.  Any others to consider?

Also, any paddle recommendations? I'm assuming the ones that come with the boards are pretty poor and she would want to upgrade.

Worth a shot if shipping isn't too much. I believe the seller has more than one to choose from and he is a dealer and uses Red Paddle boards in their rental fleet.
Red Paddle has a good reputation and a variety of models.

At just 130lbs, I think she'd also be fine on the 11'6" Touring Zen.

On sale 2016: https://greenwatersports.com/shop/starboard-11-6-astro-touring-zen

Another to check out would be the 11' Sport.

Paddles, there are many levels of quality and performance. I have a nice hybrid carbon 3 piece by Starboard. Also some nice Accent paddles. Red Paddle Co range should be here in a few weeks. Lots of paddles at varying levels and prices.

Let me know what you need and I'll extend the Zoner prices to your family.

Great, thanks for the replies.  The Astro Touring Zen looks like a great one.  We rented a Starboard once and I really liked board.

Are most of the touring boards 30" wide?  Seems kind of wide for a 130lb experienced paddler on flat water.  But I'm sure the more niche the boards get, the more expensive things get.

Going narrower you tend to move into the race boards and they are usually 12'6" or 14'. Other than the Max Race 10'6" x 24" kids board, I can't think of any that are short and narrow for touring.

Hi
My sister in law has had a 10'6" Ride from Red Paddle co. She is about 130lbs and loves it for flat water and easy river paddles. I have paddled it also and it is very stable, had a 60lb dog on board and lots of fun. Her husband (my brother at 170 lbs) really likes it also and I just piched one up for him. They were on sale for $1088 Canadian. Red also has a narrower 10' board that looks a little sportier.

Look at the Red Paddle race boards.

The 10-6x24" is rated to 155lbs.

But obviously there are longer ones too.

30" will probably be uncomfortably wide for her.

The Reds are lovely and light, which is an important consideration if you are a flyweight, and the bag/pump they come with are the best in the business. These things make quite a difference with an iSUP.

Not cheap, but worth every penny.

One thing I've found with inflatables is the stability compared with hard boards means you should add 2" width. So if you are comfortable on a 28" wide hard board, then get a 30" wide inflatable.

Very true.

But if you are happy paddling a 24" windsurfer then a 30" wide board is going to be frustrating to paddle and hard to keep in a straight line.

The 12-6 elite race Red Paddle is 26" wide, which woul fulfil your criteria of being 2" wider than a hard board she can already paddle.

It all depends mostly on how flat the water is where you paddle. A 26" wide inflatable in choppy seas is going to require very good balance.
