Water Temperatures
« on: February 13, 2017, 07:19:25 AM »
Where I live in southeast Texas, we're having a warm winter. One day last week, we hit a high temperature of 89 degrees F. Then 24 hours later, we had a major cold front come through and the next morning, we were at 33 degrees F.

These not normal air temperatures are also affecting our lake and coastal water temperatures. Sometimes I go supping at Lake Conroe. This morning the water temperature at Lake Conroe is 62 degrees F. I checked the water temperature at daylight in the private lake in the subdivision where I live. It was at 62 degrees F too.

Our coastal water temperatures are also warmer than normal. This morning at Galveston the water temperature is 65 degrees F.

Since I like to sup in a long sleeve shirt and long pants, if we don't get a major cold front that drops the temperature way down and doesn't linger for a week, I might be supping earlier than normal because these water temperatures are about a month early since we don't see these water temperatures until the middle of March.

Crazy winter we're having in all of Texas.

Good news for you.

Our water is warmer as well, 55. Here's a fog produced the other morning when the air temp dipped to 30.

89 degree air and 62 degree water? Those are typical summer temps for us up here in NH. Why weren't you out paddling? Too cold?   ;D

Just wearing a long sleeve shirt and long pants, I don't have a lot of "natural insulation" (if you get my drift) at my 150 pound weight to keep me warm on the water. I just have to wait for my 66 degrees F water temperature comfort zone. Anything lower than 66 degrees F water temperature is "hypothermia" to me. ;) Right now the outside air temperature at my home is 76 degrees F.

The neighbor's chinese tallow tree is blooming and my lawn grass is growing too. I might have to cut the lawn seven days from now if this keeps up.

We had a nice 50F day last Wednesday. Almost too hot for a winter suit. Water is around 39.

We got some good swells from last night's storm. Tomorrow will be head high @ 12 seconds, light offshore wind, 25 - 30 degrees.  Perfect conditions for February.

Our winter water temp is around 55-57F.  Air temp at dawn is in the 40s or 50s--a few days in the 30s.  My rule of thumb for paddling (not SUS) is as long as it's in the 40s, board shorts and short-sleeved rashguard is fine.  I get quizzical looks from people bundled up for walks or bike rides, but I'm plenty warm after 3min of paddling.  Truth is, SUP is practically stationary exercise, we're working hard and not really moving fast enough (like on a bike) to where wind chill becomes an issue.

I surfed some head high waves last week in whiteout fog. What a trip. I couldn't see the waves until they were about 50 feet away. Just me and three other people out, so there were beaucoup waves to go around, even though a lot of them landed on my head.

I'll take fog over crowds any day. I loved it, even though the lack of a horizon made me feel like I was falling forward all the time.

I've had fog sessions that blew away a sunny day sesh. Sometimes it'll surprise ya!

Water's cold here in NJ, Night Wing, but I've yet to get in. Just got back from 16 days in Costa Rica and my 5/4 hooded wetsuit is in CA getting a refurb after 3 solid seasons. I'll report back once I get in. btw-I have ALOT of video from Costa from both the SOLOSHOT and the GoPro. Getting started on edits now.. Here's a coupla frames.

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

@surfercook

Nice action photos. Makes me "green with envy". BTW, those photos are a nice size (19020x1090). They would make a nice desktop photo on a 24" monitor.

Our water temp is 40 f or thereabouts.....air temp colder.

Keeps places even quieter but we don't really have crowds anyway.

do you have seasons, Coldy, or is that a statement for the year?
 ;)

Here the sun is back, will keep getting stronger and the water temps are already on their way up. Toasty 44 F today and on the up and up.

I'm heading out skiing.

Haaaa! Yes, sometimes wonder if it will ever get warmer.

We are in winter just now but approaching Spring when air temp warms up. In summer the warmest the water gets is 60 f.
