Wood porn
« on: February 06, 2017, 10:01:54 AM »
LPB will appreciate this place. I'm thinking of building my daughter a live edge dining room table. Slabs galore...http://www.berkshireproducts.com/index.php

I'm thinking about getting a discounted slab with some checking then installing butterflies. Infill with epoxy and epoxy bar top finish..

Just the thought of moving something like that around (I'm a carpenter, so been there) makes my back hurt. It always starts with smart leverage as the plan, then turns to "shit! shit! set it down......" as you lean back to stretch out the damage done to every part of your body.

Does look like a fun project.
It's not overhead to me!

@stoneaxe

Looks like you're going to have a nice project. The link on the Berkshire site goes to the video below. I found the video interesting.

That slab in the Berkshire Products photo looks remarkably like the end view of a couple 2x4s I got this weekend at Home Depot.

Seriously Stoneaxe, have you ever seen the work of George Nakashima?  I have a book he wrote, The Soul of a Tree, that I think you (or anyone who works with wood or just appreciates those who do) would like.  He used live edges for tables but also benches, headboards...

I love Nakashima's work. Raw edge with butterflies is pretty much his signature. His daughter still runs his factory/shop.

I've wanted to do one for a long time. My daughter mentioned she would like one but it was too expensive....so I'm thinking Christmas next year.

I hear you TD....I have long stone walls, granite slab benches and tons (many) of other very heavy shit that I placed mostly by hand......now I couldn't begin to move it without something popping... :P.  I brought the two slabs of granite that make the bench (6" thick, 6' long and 18" wide) home from Boston (found them in a parking lot and they were happy to get rid of them). 50 miles in the back of a Toyota corolla station wagon........ :o. They were square so I stood them up on end like dominoes and tipped it into the back onto a roller. Front end was almost floating and the rear was buried but it made it without issue.

I have a windsurf buddy, named Brooks Lawrence, that mills slabs out of fallen trees in Central California and builds some amazing furniture pieces...world class...best known for his raw-edged tables...

We have a dining table, 3 legged coffee table, mantle piece, and the top of the tiki bar in my shop...really stoked to have them...pics below...

Your daughter will cherish her piece the rest of her life...

Very nice WD. Love the figure in that mantle.

His name sounds familiar, I may have either met or heard of him online in some of the woodworking forums.

His uncle was a world champion bull rider...and, he absolutely shreds waves on a SUP, sailboard, surfboard, or kiteboard...etc...

p.s. Our mantle is Sycamore...really cool...looks like snakeskin...

Beautiful joinery in that chair. I can't wait to get a decent shop setup. Working in my crappy little shed is so limiting. My bandsaw will handle 18" but i haven't cut anything more than 12" yet. I was thinking about buying a portable bandsaw mill about 10 years ago just before the shit hit the fan with my head. Was planning on harvesting the big white pines I have at the back of my property to build a post and beam barn.

Thanks for the link! Didn't realize there is something like that in driving vicinity, I thought it would be only available on west coast.

Not a table or slab but thought it fit in with the title and may be of interest to some.
Pretty cool I think.

Oooh...I've thought about building a teardrop for many years. That's beautiful but I think I'd have to make a bigger one. Great looking project though...love the bright finish. Need to tow that behind a woody wagon.
