Learning to Foil video
« on: February 03, 2017, 01:43:36 PM »
In this video Sam Pa'e and myself talk about learning to foil on a stand up board as well as safety and gear.
If you are thinking about trying it, there is a lot of helpful information in this video:

Great video Robert. Nice to hear Sam's perspective as well. Looks fun, but far from the standard SUP learning curve.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

It's interesting that there's such focus on just getting the balance right, lean back, then forward to hold the foil down, following the curve of the wave, not too close to the curl, don't lean sideways, watch out for roll and the razor sharp foils ,if it ventilates at the surface then it stalls and crashes.
 Looks difficult for anyone. :-[

but is it easier if you're a surfer or not approaching foiling with a mindset.
One guy in the video mentioned several times that he had to change his approach becuase he had an established surfing balance.

Hi Surffoils,
Yes, once you get the feel for it, it's really not very difficult or complicated to foil but we were trying to make the point that it is quite challenging to get the feel for it at first and that you tend to wipe out a lot as you are figuring it out.  I doubt that you were able to fly the foil level the first time you tried it, am I right?  It's not just the mind set, we are conditioned from surfing to react a certain way, like to lean back on a steep takeoff and to put more weight on the inside rail, so you have to re-learn how to react to different situations and that takes a while, you can't count on your experience and muscle memory from surfing.  This was recorded after only my third time trying it in surf, so I was still very much a beginner, which is a good time to give pointers to others trying to learn I think.

I cheated on my first Foil attempts, I rode it prone for days until I got the knack. But in beach breaks.
It tripped me out to reach under the board and realise there was clear air between the board and the water.
Riding prone the silence is more apparent too, funny how much noise is created by the board moving thru the water.
You do quickly learn to ride it like a plane aware of the surface.
And then I moved to standup.
 Great video, thanks !

I just posted another "How to SUP Foil" video where Sam and I give some pointers to Evan and Lee who are just learning to foil.  It's kind of long but has lots of good information:

Robert,  This is a fantastic video.  Can you speak more to the pros/cons of riding with straps vs without?  Also, what is distance from trailing edge of the mast to tail on your 6'6?

Thanks!

Glad you liked the video.  Regarding straps, I tried both footstraps and foot hooks and did not really like them, I found it difficult to take off and put my feet in the straps at the same time, even though I have been windsurfing with straps for over 30 years.  I think for carving turns, floaters and aerials they add a lot of control and I will probably try to use them again for surfing but for now I like the freedom of going strapless.  Having the arch pad and kick tail on the pad in the right spot over the foil really helps to feel where your back foot needs to go and if you don't use straps, you absolutely need something to find your back foot position without looking.

Regarding the foil position, the training edge of the mast is about 13" from the tail on my 6'6.  The shorter the board is, the closer to the tail we mount the foil.

Excellent video. Watching it makes me feel more confident that I could do it.

Interesting short leash design I haven't seen before. I see Sam has a tail handle on his board.

Badger, I'm pretty sure Sam was the original inventor of the tail handle. (I owe that guy so many Primos for that.)

Robert, do you guys sell those retractable leashes?

Sam was one of the main motivators that started me using them four years ago. The tail handle is an important piece of gear that I wouldn't be without. All my boards have one.
