Insane sizing
« on: February 01, 2017, 09:11:49 PM »
Anyone know how the sizing works for the insane? Run the same volume as you would an Acid or a Flow or should you add some? I know Bert thinks volume doesn't matter as much as surface area on surfboards. Does that apply in this case?

Good question. I'm looking forward to the answers.

I think I would want to run the about same volume as I normally ride which for my weight is around 110 liters. I could go lower but I don't feel like I need to.

If I got an Insane, I would want to go long, like 9'5, maybe even 9'11. I only weigh about 170 lbs. As with the all other Sunova models, the stock volumes run high for my weight. I might be able to get away with the 9'5 @ 124 L, but the 9'11 @ 145 is way more volume than I would want.

A custom Insane 9'5 x 30" @ 110/115 Liters would make a nice stable big wave/chop board for me.

I will ask Tino to answer this, because Bert has updated the design on the Insane after the 1st run feedback.

Menwhile...here's an interesting video, that shows Bert shooting the new "Shapers view of the Insane"
after some factory foolery, you watch the video being shot and get a early view of the shape update

The link is to the Sunova FB page...scroll down a few posts... look for "live" video called
"Shooting shaping bay videos with Bert Burger"

My Current 'step-up' 9'8 Starboard Pro (141L) doesn't set rails as well as I would like on really steep sections, but does get on waves just fine.
My 8'8 Speeed gets me on to double head high waves if I am being canny about it, but its this crazy, hang on for dear life kind of ride. Its 123L is a comfortable volume for me in most conditions @ 103kg.
So on paper the 9'11 looks too big for what I want, being longer, wider and thicker with more volume than my starboard. magic rails might solve all of the that of course.
The 9'5 insane seems like better complement to my Speeed than a 9'1 Acid, but I still want it to feel like a step up in terms of getting onto waves earlier, and I'm not sure if I'll get enough off that without adding volume.

Two of the Sunova team riders had proto-type Insanes when we were in Fiji last spring. They we in the 7 foot something with very low volume, maybe like the 7'11". Very cool boards and they totally ripped on them despite the crummy conditions. Jacy surfs his on the North Shore  of Oahu.

Okay, so this is a timely topic for me, as I am still getting used to my new 9'2 Insane. I've only had a few surfs in it, so I'll just report on what I've noticed. First off the fit and finish are great. Volume is at 112 liters, and width at 27 3/8.  It's got a pretty domed deck, and I did have some trouble in side to side stability while standing around waiting for waves with some wind chop and refracted swell.

Actually I got bucked off about 20 times. Which is unusual for me on my 9'0 Hokua
or 9'2 PSH. But both those boards are wider and have more volume (125 L)
I caught about 4 waves and the ride was pretty smooth. The board was set up as a
quad on an overhead reef wave.  Another day I had it in some beach break, as a thruster, and it was more stable with glassier conditions. Felt faster as a quad, but more control with the 3 fin set up.

I think more time on the board will allow me to dial it in better. But maybe the 9'5
might be the better option. I do not like to sit down too much between sets, and normally the larger waves I surf always have chop while waiting out the back. I got the 9'2 to fit better on airplanes. I am about 160 lbs and have been riding sus for years.

That's what I've got for now, I'll revisit this thread when I have more time on the board. I've also demo'ed the acid, speeed, and flow at different sizes, and find the Sunova's to be good across the range.

I'd be good to know if they were planning more production sizes in the future. I know custom is always an option. but the gap between sizes on the pdf just seems huge.
