You can thank Pono and I later
« on: January 20, 2017, 12:41:07 PM »
12oz at a time preferably. Our great to the nth power grandfather (John Jenney) was very likely one of the 1st people to brew beer in America....now THAT is a legacy to be proud of. He came over in 1623, was a miller and brewer, and started the 1st successful grist mill in the country. So first round is on you folks when we meet..... :)

True story, up to a point, my grandmother on my dad's side ran with Poncho Villa, many Caucasians did, and they drank a lot of tequila (all true).
Tequila is now the fastest growing spirit in popularity in the U.S. (true again).
Thanks grandma! (well, maybe true  ::))
It takes a quiver to do that.

VERY cool Weasel.  My grandma was born in Albuquerque, waaay back when.  She told us of the day when she saw Crazy Horse ride through town.

Cool Stoney, wind mills are awesome.

My old boss and I disassembled, moved and restored the one in the vid below.  It was fascinating to learn first hand how the old time carpenters re used old timbers.  The braces inside on the first floor were recycled from a ship, which may have been recycled...  Someone said 1600's but who knows, we didn't carbon date anything.  We recycled absolutely everything we could, regardless of cost.

3 summers and two winters on that job, just the two of us.  We remade some big pieces of wood, primarily by hand. We turned the main shaft (the one that holds the vanes) on a home rigged lathe.  Bark to installation.  Fun job.

Looks like my shingles are holding tight after 20 years.  Nailed and plane fitted by hand.  Pre curved the ones on the bonnet.  Weighted them down in a big stack for a winter.  My boss was good about the old ways.

The rafters on the bonnet were ok, but the sheathing was shot.  So we steamed and fit oak boards.  Fun stuff.

Hmm, reminiscing.  Need to get back one summer when they spin it up.  I could help spot the parts we made new.  I did a lot of hand planing but left subtle hints.   The crew that restores it next time will spot them for sure.

That big wheel out back - opposite the vanes - has a chain fall on it during operation.  You can pull the chain  from the ground.  It rotates the bonnet to orient the vanes to the wind.  Nifty mechanical stuff inside.  Cool building.  Very stout construction.

The 8th vane is off in the vid to keep the kids from climbing it.  We remade the vanes from scratch out of mahogany boards, epoxy, screws and plugs.  But the UV started to eat the West System epoxy, so they painted them.  They were snappy looking all shiny wood.

I think the Jenny mill was water powered, but that's one hell of an experience Larry.

What brought this up Bob, you doing a little genealogy?
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Self explanatory. Beer begets beer. We drink, we think, we surmise.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Bingo....that and I'm building a cabinet for our neighborhood brewery. My next door neighbor has become a master brewer since I 1st turned him onto home brewing about 15 years ago. He's brewing beers as good as any I've tried....really, really good and he is methodical in his craft. Detailed notes on every brew and he can recreate any of them.   Now we are upping the game. The neighbor beyond him used to work for a company that designs/builds high purity water systems so we are building a new high tech almost fully automated brewing system. I'm building a cabinet for it that will turn into a credenza when not brewing. He has a barn that he is turning into the ultimate man cave (so long as you like beer, pool, and football.... ;D).

Awesome story LBP but Bill is right it is water powered, sit's on the town brook. The original may have had some timbers from the Mayflower in it if any were still around...the gristmill was built years after the landing....the Mayflower was almost immediately disassembled to build structures as LPB mentioned. I'm going to have to go take a look at your handiwork....I know where that windmill is located.

That's an awesome story, and I'm sure it also includes the the first incident of beer-goggles in the New World!
