My first board was my production built Hobie ATR-2 so I've already "kissed some frogs" with that board.  ;)

And my present Hammer is my "second" board so I'm well aware of the cost involved to get a custom built MAGIC board since I've already got my first MAGIC surfing sup in the Hammer.

Your Hammer is actually frog. You just don't know it yet.  ;)

With a bad back; not too bad, but bad enough to cause me some back discomfort, I like my Hammer frog. Maybe when you get some age on you and your back starts acting up, even you might like a frog that treats your back right. In my case, I'm not looking for performance. I'm looking for a "comfy board" and if a frog can deliver comfort, then that is what I need and want.

I'm not far behind you NW. I'll be turning 60 this year.

I have severely herniated discs in my back and neck that are starting to bother me. I know at some point I won't be able to ride my 8'4 any more. As it is, I can only use it on the cleanest days.

My super stable 8'10 X 31 is similar to your Hammer only mine has a much lower volume at 119 liters. It has more float than I need at 170 lbs. I could do flatwater on it but my 12'6 X 28" is a lot more efficient through the water.

You are on the right track with the 10'6 X 30". It will make a world of difference on the flatwater and still catch waves if you want it to.

@Badger

Getting old  is no fun. Tomorrow, Thursday, is my birthday and I'll be 67 years old. As a pre-birthday present, last week my opthalomogist told me I have a cataract in my right and left eye. Not "ripe enough" to remove, but when they get larger, I'll have them removed (with a new lens for each eye) during the winter months since I don't take out my Hammer in wintertime.

I had a bone spur in my left AC should joint removed 15 years ago and my orthopedic surgeon told me I might have the same thing happen to my right shoulder. This morning, I woke up and I had a problem with my right shoulder. I seem to have the same symptoms I had with my left shoulder so I'm going to wait a week and see if the symptoms go away and if they don't, I'll go to my orthopedic surgeon and have him x-ray my right shoulder and see if I have a bone spur in my right AC shoulder joint.

Getting back on topic. I don't have any herniated discs, but I do have some back discomfort. This is why I like a comfy board over a performance board especially in the wind and water conditions which you can see in the two links in this topic thread I posted earlier, where I sup surf at on the upper Texas coast.

With an analogy to Cinderella, at my age with all my little ailments, I really like a "frog" board and prefer it over a "prince" board.  ;)
