Volumetric lift of a deck pad???
« on: January 13, 2017, 10:32:30 AM »
Has anyone calculated the volumetric lift of a deck pad? Im assuming its less than half a Liter.

I know it adds buoyancy but don't know how much. Curious if one could be made thick enough to add a liter or more of lift to a board that was on the edge of sinking.  Even if it was temporary until you got used to a low volume board.  Kind of like training wheels.

It might have to be an inch thick, which would hurt your fight with gravity, by raising your center of gravity that much, but then again....maybe someone needs to market it (DaKine?).

Anyone have a spare pad and a big tub of water?

I've thought a little about this. I think the best way to do it would be to surround the deck pad with a bumper, kinda like a kick tail for the entire board. If you did it right it would be almost like turning a domed deck into a step rail. Best case would be it adds 3-5 liters, but you might get some bonus stability from the bumpers too.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but unless it's submerged I don't think it's contributing to anything. If it's on top, out of the water, isn't it only displacing air?

  Damn science.

Totally, you would probably have to be within ~10L of neutral bouncy for it to matter. At 104 kg my 116L board has it's pad fully submerged. Only the nose is out of the water.

plus volume does not do much in the way of adding stability in the first place. Stability come more from length width and outline

Yes, the assumption is your board is submerged and the stability like you said is more about the shape.  Unless it was exaggerated....say 2" thick then it would be like a step deck as exiled suggested.
