Some things actually are better than surfing
« on: January 09, 2017, 08:16:33 AM »
I was packed up and ready to go late Sunday morning. Waves on the cam, board and paddle on the truck, enough rubber to keep the cold at bay...just waiting for the tide to drop a little when it happened.

"Grampy....I really, really wanted to go sledding today but mom is at work and Grammy isn't feeling good....are you going to be gone all day?". Aaaaargh....the puppy dog eyes got me! So instead of a wetsuit I was donning snow gear and boots....and my granddaughters new favorite word is "balaclava".

We had a blast, a 100 kids and their parents at the best sledding hill around....red cheeks, snow packed ears, screams of excitement, and lots of laughs. It was dark when we got home. We we're warming up with some hot cocoa when she said "Grampy....I love you". The feeling I get from surfing is certainly amazing....but it doesn't warm my soul like those words do.

At reading just your title, I was all set to accuse you of blasphemy. LOL, but it looks like you got your priorities straight and did something you will never regret.   Good choice, that day will never come again, glad you used it to invest into someone extremely important.   She will pay you back with love and care when you are too old to surf.

So instead of a wetsuit I was donning snow gear and boots....

I had a similar experience this weekend too. We finished the day with pizza and an episode of The Flash.  Got a great little clip of the monster catching a little air.  He was stoked.

A grandpa who surfs  8)  now that's pretty cool . . . . too.

Great story.

I combined surfing with family time last week.  My 12 year old niece came to California from New Jersey and wanted to surf.  So I had to run a surf camp for my 12 year old daughter, 14 year old daughter and my niece.  It was COLD, COLD, COLD which means high 40's and windy in Northern California.

I spent 1 1/2 hours suiting everybody wrangling up the booties, dive shirts, wetsuits, 2 wavestorms, 2 SUP's, paddles all loaded into the VW Eurovan.  We then headed to Poo Beach, Lindemar California.

The second photo was a momento of the event.  My 14 year old catching one of her first good waves on a SUP . . . a Goofy footer like dad.

My niece said surfing was her favorite thing about California even when we packed in parties, Half Moon Bay, San Francisco and Yosemite all in just 5 days.

That's awesome, Stoneaxe!

I was tempted to go surfing yesterday too, but opted instead to take my almost 1 y.o. daughter to see our friends' bluegrass band perform. She was mesmerized by them, which was quite fun to see. It didn't hurt that they were performing at a local brewery either.  ;D

Way to go Stoneaxe...

beascho ...your fortunate your daughters like what you like...
You never know when they are going to come around to love the things you do.  My 33 year old daughter just started asking me about helping her learn to surf...had her and younger brother at the beach almost every weekend, lived two blocks from the beach...never went to the beach without a board with me...finally coming around now...never saw that coming.

Love paddling my Sup with my grandson sitting on the front too...best of both worlds.

Some of the best experiences life has to offer...children & grand children.

Yeah, my daughter and two grandsons are here visiting, so I've only had one day of surfing since they arrived. They leave tomorrow. Today was a beach day, but no surfing. Hamburgers at the Riders Club--the only hamburger place I know of that makes a better burger than I do. I cheat and use Wagu beef and they still aren't quite as good.
