Waterproof MP3 Player for Training
« on: January 06, 2017, 03:11:46 AM »
Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone ever used a waterproof MP3 player for training paddles?

If so have you got any advice on ones to buy/avoid?

Cheers,
James

I had a Sony one is all in one piece like a earphone. One of the side lost power in very short time. I did not feel like going through the whole warranty process rigemarole.
I looked at the Ipod sinked in gel by a third party but there are extremely expensive and there was mixed review on reliability.
I ended up getting a normal Ipod basic small one, put it in a waterproof key pouch with a set of water proof earplugs going through the side of the pouch and the hole sealed with glue. Works perfectly. I just do not use it much as I miss the sounds of being outside on the water....

Thanks for your reply Luc

I agree about the sounds of being on the water but want to improve my racing training and thought if I lose myself in some music I might train harder

I got a Barnacle speaker for Christmas and love it. It has 4g of storage for MP3 files and suctions to your boards. Waterproof as well to 6' apparently. They also have a 3M attachment if your board isnt perfectly smooth for the suction cup.

I have my iPhone in a lifeproof case which amplifies the sound of the speakers passively. I stick that in a waterproof case with magnetic closure and carry it in the shoulder pocket of my camelbak. That gives me excellent sound with no headphones. I can also use Motion-x to record my training and get audible pace coaching mixed with the music. And I have my phone for emergencies.

Have to include the iPhone 7 in the mix. I've been using it on the water for few months, and spent some
time in the water with it, unprotected. The phone shows no issues up to date.

It still feels a little weird to wash the phone after every session 8)

Thanks for the replies PonoBill, clinto and burchas... only recently got a new phone and not sure I can afford the iphone 7 :-)

I'll have a look into the Barnacle speaker too

I also saw a Ultimate Ears Boom 2 speaker in a shop on the weekend which looked pretty good... the sound quality was amazing!

I used to swim with a set of H2O Audio earbuds and a case for my postage stamp size iPod.  Worked pretty well.
