1)  Putting myself down for another 1,000mi this year.
2)  Turning 50 in May so I'm shooting to do the Rivers for Change 100miler.  Will start a thread on that shortly.
3)  Making this the first year in a long time where I do NOT purchase a board.  Really.  I have enough good boards.  No little tweak on a board is going to substantially change my speed or my surfing.

Lose 30 pounds and keep and/or add muscle. Of to a lousy start with the holidays and my birthday, but I'm back on track starting today (fasting for at least a day).

Other than that, I'll just keep having a great life and great friends and family.

Oh, and I need to finish my retirement book and publish "Riding Anouk".

You may want to re-think the 'fasting' idea, although, I can imagine that for you, 'fasting' means eating what a normal human would.

When you fast, you trick your body into thinking it's going into a starvation phase (a leftover from evolution as hunter-gatherers), so it actually conserves calories rather than burning them. It is better to eat lightly and reduce your calories overall so that you just have a slight deficit under what you'd need to maintain your current weight. So if you need, say, 3000 cal, just reduce to no less than 2500. The 500 cal deficit will mean a loss of a pound of fat a week, roughly. Want to speed up the fat loss? Keep working out and skip a Pono Bill dinner twice a week and just have a small salad or nothing. Once you go to bed, you won't even know you skipped a meal.

Cycling through over-reduction of caloric intake, followed by overeating is super common and is one of the typical reasons people don't ever lose fat. It's not a quick starve solution, it's actually a long-term eating habit alteration.

Remember, this is your break out year. Banana Bruce is close to you in age and he's got about 4% body fat and he paddles oc1 as much as you paddle standup. You could be a machine if you try something new on the eating front. 'How bout an order of poke, some sushi, oh, and bring us some of that, and that, and I'll have a vodka martini, three olives please'  ;D ;D ;D

Hey Cove, I was always under the impression that shorter periods of fasting (24hours or less) would trick the body into burning fat stores.  Not that I would know, I've never skipped a meal on purpose.

My SUP goal for 2017 started in December by adding a moderate running program to the mix.  I'm in week 3 of a 9 week Couch 2 5K program that's designed for...well, "couch potatoes".  I'm no couch potato so I'm finding it hard to hold back.  But, I'm sticking with the plan because previously any running programs, that I have put together myself, have resulted in joint issues and failure.

I want to strengthen my cardio not just to improve my flat water speed a bit but also to improve my surfing and hold-down tolerance/confidence.

I can feel it already, now I bark at the dog to go out. ;D

SUP Goals for 2017:
Being part of the 100/100 Paddle Challenge Group on Facebook, my first goal is to complete 500 paddle miles by April 10th.  It will be difficult paddling here in Maryland as this winter so far is a cold one and the water is starting to freeze.  Add shorter days of daylight and its a tough challenge for me but I am going for it.

Continue cross training to perform better in races and get ready for the Carolina Cup Graveyard Race in April!!!!!
Lose 10 lbs over next couple months.  I lost 35 lbs 4 years ago and I have kept most of it off but put about 10lbs of it back on over the winter it seems.  Its amazing how paddling can help maintain your weight with a good diet.

Do not purchase any NEW race boards.  Last fall I got my 2016 Infinity Whiplash and a 2016 All Star.  I need to race these boards for an entire season or two before getting a new one but every year I see the new boards coming out and order one.  I'm an Infinity Multiple fin board paddler so I like riding there newest designs but it gets quite expensive.  I will say my current Whiplash is damn near perfect.  No Complaints.  Last 2 race results were very good on it.  I have a race coming up Jan 20th in Wrightsville Beach.  One immediate goal is to do well in that race but most importantly have fun at the event.  Otherwise why race?! If you are not having fun doing it, your doing it for the wrong reasons.

One final goal- surf sup more days this year and do more downwinders.

Bean, as with all things nutrition related, you can find hundreds, if not thousands of articles that support a particular approach. Does fasting have a place in a healthy diet/weight maintenance program? Sure, it could. But it is another see-saw, kind of extreme all-or-nothing approach that is hard to maintain and that can disrupt your metabolism.

I think that the Livestrong site has pretty sound advice that is not based on fads. Here's what they say.....

http://www.livestrong.com/article/148906-fasting-tips-for-weight-loss/

Even people with good educational background in nutrition end up disagreeing on just about everything. It's why the US has a diet industry second to none. But, how well is that working? We've also got a bloated, fat country. Short cuts and quick loss schemes don't seem to work for most people in the long-run.

Best thing, in my opinion, is a sustainable, long-term, healthy approach to eating and being aware of calories in and out. Bouncing around with fasts and binges never seems to work. And, the truth is, most people that fast will make up for it by binging. Obviously, everyone is different and your mileage may vary. I sure don't have the last word on the fasting thing, just another opinion, worth everything you paid for it.  : 8)

Over here in the U.K. It's good for paddlesurfing a wide variety of beaches. My mates stay/go local, I go far to find surf and see new places. I've found some quiet fabulous places, a few locals, I like that.
So:
1) continue my travels, meet locals, surf thier spots.
2) nail those long roundhouse cutbacks (think Levi Siver windsurfing bottom turns.. soooo drawn out)
3) compliment my Speeed 8'10 with a Flow, maybe a 9' +
4) find some quiet French beaches, chill out, surf, get a tan.

This year I plan to do a better job of recording miles. I think 2000 miles is do-able. I THINK it's about what I do, but the only way to know is to log it.

I want to race more than last year. I'm going to check out what's going on in Socal for racing.

I'll see you there. https://paddleguru.com/races/2017HanohanoHukiOceanChallenge

SoCal Ocean Racing season.  http://www.eteamz.com/socaloceanracing/

I'm starting to put in miles in preperation.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

There are too many to list, but these are my top.

1. Paddle with bears, preferably in the PNW, but I would be just as happy hanging with them in PA also.
2. Get a camera setup or 2 that's reasonable to take on a touring/racing board, but can focus fast enough to get the shot.
3. Keep doing it and having fun, through the winter until it ices up

Sup Goals?

1.) To get back on a SUP.  (my shoulder surgery recovery is taking longer than I hoped)
2.) Ride a longboard SUP without looking like a stink bug.
3.) Get a traditional performance SUP shaped for me (maybe 7'4 x 26, 81 L) and learn how to ride it (my Kronos NB has been a bit of a gateway drug).

But really, I'd be happy with just #1.

Talk to me Goose.

(I highly recommend watching seasons 1 & 2 of the series called "Alone".  It was originally put out by the History Channel.)

Here's a little guy we had to walk past on the way down to one of our favorite spots:
