Miramar Return on the Fat eBike
« on: January 02, 2017, 09:32:34 AM »
For those of you considering a Fat eBike consider this.

Your own private break just cruise along the beach and Stop.  This was my semi-time lapsed return to home on my electric fatbike.  You can't do this (legally) with any other current form of technology.

That thing cruises the beach sand nicely Can you post a link for it? You live pretty far away from the beach (relatively). I'm only like two blocks away.
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Tough crowd.  We live about 3 blocks.  Tsunami insurance. ...I guess it just seemed farther since you rode the beach for so far. Here on Long Beach Island where I live there is so much parking it's easy to access most breaks. But that fatty tired bike would still be a blast. I would dig having that rig. Always wanted to have a board in tow like that. I did manage a fun beach bike ride during the super moon cycle. Our sandbars were totally exposed dry. Set up the SOLOSHOT to capture the action.

Heh, yea, what a schlep! Lewis and Clark called to invite you into their club. What was that, all of a half mile?
No freeways, traffic, stoplights, and just one crazy dog to show you where to ford the stream. A true explorer.  ;D

(Based on Google Earth, it's .26 miles from driveway to whitewater as the crow flies.  I hope you don't get lost on the way!  Jealousy meter pegged.)

Just saw that Google Earth feature --> Right Click --> Measure Distance --> Then Drag and Drop.

1,225 feet from my front door to the sand.  This was the return path, not exactly straight.

The electric fatbike is a blast on the sand.  At sunset I will often take the dog for a run, he runs and I ride.  I will take this same path in reverse and head south for ~ 1 mile and return.  One of the coolest things about riding on the beach is the ocean regrooms the beach twice a day.  There are new bumps, ramps and flats each time I make the run down the beach.  The dog loves it.  I just have to stay ahead of him or he kicks sand in my face.

Right on, thanks for sharing.

So you are rocking 4" tires?  How are they in the really soft dry dunes?  Mine are only 3" and I bottomed out and got sand in the chain.

Oh and did you by chance surf there before the jetty changed the surf?  I ran into an elder the other day who was cursing the engineers for ruining the surf, saying it never breaks there any more  ;D
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

The thing about electric fatbikes is everyone gives you shit about them until they try it, then they want one. It's really strange. the big difference between unaided footpower and e-bike is how much you use them. I default to my ebike for almost everything--from a quick blast a half mile to the store, to the 1.5 miles to my shop (uphill all the way) to 50 miles for the hell of it.

They are totally different animals. People GO for a bike ride. Put on their lycra and their funny shoes, meet up with a friend and go for a ride. That's great, I love that. An eBike is transportation. It's not a hobby or a passion. It's a tool. It's fun too, but it's a tool.

I'm on mine all the time. I used to ride bikes a lot--as much as once a day. I'm on my eBike several times a day. When we stayed in La Jolla two weeks ago I only started my truck to go surfing, and everytime I did I thought "I have to get surf racks for my bike".

So true. My wife gave me shit about it. Then we went for a bike ride together. After 15 minutes of riding she wanted to switch bikes, and then she wanted a motor too.

I don't have Google Earth but Google Maps has the same feature. I use it all the time for when I need to know how far I have to paddle to get to a remote surf spot and for planning downwinders. It's also handy for drawing a line to show the wind direction to see which surf spots will be the cleanest or for picking the best downwind line for a certain body of water.

eBike is so very tempting, and for so many reasons.  Schlepping a board to the shore has to be number 1 though.  An alternate to a car to get to work might be #2 if traffic gets any worse.

Google earth is an old friend.  Geologists using the pro are using overlays of USGS maps, surveyed cad maps, research maps you name it, with the application coordinating everything.  Damn thing may put many of us out of business soon.
