Good stuff offshore, I like the idea.... thinking outside the box!

A great way to improve your skills and fitness... why not create a buzz about it!

Sometimes the wind blows so hard you miss a paddle grab or can't push the blade into the wind fast enough.

Thanks for all the comments. This is quite an unusual upwind as it is quite sheltered and the water is fairly flat. In these conditions I actually use long and deep paddle strokes and crouch right down at the end of each stroke. I find this to be lower energy and more effective than using shorter higher cadence strokes in these flat conditions.

However as soon as there starts to be any waves coming at you (as in going upwind in downwind conditions) it is a different situation and the shorter higher cadence strokes are better. I'll aim to do a vid going upwind in bigger conditions to see if I can show how the technique differs.

Slick makes a good waterproof gimbal at a reasonable price - $239.  https://www.slick.video/products/slick  Good mounting systems, and self-contained. Not shipping until March, but it's been reviewed quite a bit and the design looks excellent.

OS--You might try feathering your paddle. It's good practice to feather every stroke, I do it with my lower wrist and it makes going upwind a bit easier--you can recover the blade faster, with less effort. The sooner your get the blade in the water, the less the wind slows you.

Thank you for the link, that's a cool mount and the image stabilization is pretty good.
I'm still waiting for a waterproof gimbal, does anyone know if one is available?
Seems like the Slick and Sybrillo are the gimbals claiming to be waterproof, and both are hoping to ship spring of 2017...
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Thanks Ponobill and Clay, I was not aware of these new gimbals.
The slick says snow and rain proof, not waterproof while the Sybrillo claims it's waterproof:

Good to see these will be available soon, probably the second generation will be better and cost less.

Good stuff, sure ll ofus need to get skillsupwinding.
On my spots around home,we get some river channels where SW winds blow in, when tide against wind, that creates funny bumps for Dowwinding, game is doing several up/down wind runs of about 2/3 mile. Thanks to the current,I have been unwinding against 3,knots, above that force, if current doen't help, I go backwards.
2 things help,in my feeling:
1- a shorter paddle shaft and a quick stroke, stronger when passing wave crest.
2- if wind not exactly against,a fore daggerboard that I remove when down winding. It stabilizes course and board.

Okay here is the 2017 Starboard Ace 14 x 27" going upwind for one minute in slightly more challenging conditions than the Bullet in the vid at the start of this thread.. Definitely easier than the Bullet in these conditions but not as easy as a piercing race board..

I'll echo that OS. Next one on the list is the SIC dugout?

Looking at your Ace video It seems you had somewhat hard time keeping the rhythm going
with this board in comparison?

The conditions in the Bump Rider vid were a little windier but the Ace definitely tracks better into wind that the Bump Rider or Bullet. The better tracking and also the better wave piercing ability of the Ace makes it easier to keep up the cadence.

Yes, when I paddled next to you on the Ace and me on the Bump Rider, it was obvious that the fat round nose of the Ace was superior for punching through chop going into the wind.
