You engage your core by beating your critics to a pulp with your paddle.  Broken paddle on critic = happy core.

It's very annoying getting unsolicited advice.

So cruising around cocktail parties talking about one's deep stroke technique and engaging your core is not on?

'fraid not.

But thanks for letting us know you "cruise" at cocktail parties. Are they the kind of parties that serve little sausages? :)

I found that thinking about it and exaggerating the motion...being a metronome basically...helps transfer it to your technique better. I know you don't race but it was practicing for racing that nailed it for me. Surfing you tend to stand there waiting, maybe dabbing with the paddle for balance. When a wave comes your thinking more about getting set to catch it and then surf than you are about paddle technique and you flail a few times and your on the wave. Go out for a long paddle and just focus on the metronome.....then think about it next time you surf. Then, another thing DK would say.... REACH!

^Stoney’s right about that last point, Lint, because if you pressure your blade well up forward, using body weight, you can then pull the board up to the blade with your feet using your core. Which is pretty key answer to your question.

Easier shown than explained but Larry Cain does a pretty good job in this Paddlewoo podcast (starting around about 11’):

Paddle with both arms nearly straight - upper elbow has to bend a bit. But your lower arm should be straight, even when you recover/feather.  But keep a loose grip for flexibility throughout the stroke. Keep the paddle shaft vertical for your power phase (stroke) to keep straight.  The straighter arms will force you to rotate your torso (or core) to paddle instead of your arms for power.

This means, less work (after you get over the newbie robot feel of straight arms) and more endurance. It's about finesse.

Engaging your core while paddling is an esoteric state of affairs.

You’ll know it when you feel it.

I love your photos because it advocates inclusivity----seeing people out on their boards is awesome!

Try having your hips lead your lower hand. Not so much a surf technique
but it does engage core.
