Winter SUP surf Tofino
« on: December 08, 2016, 02:05:20 PM »
Hi there

Got out a couple of days ago. Small waves, very cool, bright and sunny. Creek said recently, "if there are no pictures then it didn't happen". Well this is a first for me, making and editing and posting a video. Not sure how to attach the Vimeo file? This is the link. Warning.......precious little surfing in this video!

Your bike setup and riding to the beach wearing the wetsuit is fantastic.

I've been doing research for a trip to vancouver island and its great to see the perspective from the bike.  Nice to see the Skate in action too.  Definitely post more videos of the surf.

FRP:  GREAT little vid!!!!!!!

Dude is that a bell on your bikes (L) handle bar?  You should've been ringing the bejesus out of it at about the 20 second mark at the dog...that would've been funny!

Seriously though, in video...Clay-est with the narration which I like.

Would like to hear more about your Sunova Skate to include: why the Skate and that size, your level and height/weight, water temp at Tofino today, wetsuit thickness, etc.

I, like so many here, have a thirst for SUP knowledge and interest.

Thanks FRP!!!!

Thanks MSup and Wsup. MSup let me know if/when you are on the Island and with any luck we can get out in the surf for a session. WSup.......yes it is a bell and yes that would have been funny as long as the dog saw the humour in it! He really was just saying hello. I chose the Skate really for the stability so I could increase my wave count stepping down from a 9'5" board and me at 5'9" and 70 kg, 61 years and beginner/intermediate. Sunova.......well they really are solid little boards. Air temp 0-2 degrees C, water temp 11-12 degrees C, 6/5/4 hooded wetsuit with Goru vest underneath, 1.5 mm gloves and neoprene boots. I was toasty warm......almost too warm!

FRP:  Curious if you demo'd the Sunova Speeed before choosing the Skate.  And if so, your thoughts on the two. I've got one of the two in my future (2017 spring/summer) and have only tried to 9'2" Speeed to date, which I REALLY liked.  I've got an opportunity to demo the Skate at some point...just gotta make it happen.

Thanks!

Hi WSup

No I haven't demoed the Speeed. Not many, Sunova boards here yet........but talk to me in the spring.........after I clock some hours on the 8''10" Speeed......it is on order! It will be an interesting side by side comparison. I suspect the overwhelming consensus of this forum would be if you like the Speeed go for it! Now I just have to sell the 9'5" Widepoint which now is a board that is way too big for me.....which has me thinking of my wife who I have not yet told that I have ordered a new board. This leads me to another funny thought, I was recently down in Guatemala having dinner with a group of friends and the serving person was clearly in charge of the small busy place. Joe asked her if she was the owner/boss of the restaurant........her reply........."No, I'M the Boss of the Boss !"  Such is life......

Cheers

FRP;  Sweeeeet!  I bet you'll love the Speeed!  I recently pulled a similar "delayed wife notification" on my new #1 (a Jimmy Lewis B&B).  All worked out fine!   ;D Either the Skate or the Speeed will round out my quiver....well, that plus the other 3 or 4 SUP's I've got too.   ;D

Here here on "Boss of the Boss".

Funny, I just met a guy from Tofino during my recent trip to Nicaragua. Looks really cool there, literally! When you say "Zero" degrees I assume you mean celcius  since your in Canada! Here in the states when it's "Zero" surfing is MUCH harder. We call that a polar vortex!  Nice narrative video you put together. I would love to visit Tofino and your video is a big help seeing what's what out there.
Thanx

One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Thanks Cook,

Was that guy's name Bob by any chance. He looks familiar. Attached is another  video this time in even smaller waves but with a few more rides.

BRAVO FRP....

Beautiful area and I continue to enjoy the narrative.  Given my interest in the Skate I'm a sponge for any/all info especially in small-ish conditions.

Look forward to more!!!
