Beasho,   Great report as always.

About the Trace,  is there any way to make the tracks or routes secret ?  I wouldn't mind having all the cool speed and route data,  but don't want it public.  Especially for backcountry skiing.

A ski partner was fooling around with a Suunto Ambit watch yesterday, but talking to her, it seemed to have some limitations.   Ripcurl has secret mode,  but not sure how it would work skiing,  it's so water specific.

Thanks,  Jay

Keep up the good work

Here's a link of some photo's taken at Mav's yesterday sent to me this AM. Seems a bit like trying to drive an F1 car during rush hour traffic.

"Jeff Clark is one of the most noteworthy and respected big-wave surfers, famous for surfing Mavericks alone for 15 years before it was widely discovered by the big-wave surfing community.
Born: March 26, 1957 (age 59 years)"  - Wikipedia

Exactly 2 Months Shy of 60  :o

This is NOT the wave that he broke his board on.  There were no boats in the channel with a roof at that time.

What this means is that he got completely destroyed in the morning.  He went in, got some lunch and new gear . . . . all new gear, paddled back out on his 718th month birthday and mixed it up once again. Unafraid to do wheelies 30 feet in the air.  If it isn't obvious Jeff Clark is the guy with the paddle on the left.  He has a 60% chance of making this wave.  The guy on the right has an 80% chance of getting blown up.

From Jeff's wife Cassandra on Facebook:

"Today was one of those glorious days at Mavericks. Jeff was as happy as a kid in a candy store, despite a broken board and a particularly gnarly.hold down. What to do? Grab another board and go out for.more. Here he is, on a cool right, marking 42 years of charging at Mavericks."

Considering that Mavericks was the first Big Wave spot to be 'Discovered' in the modern era, and Jeff was riding it in 1975 on a surfboard 20 years before people would be regularly surfing Peahi (Mavericks closest cousin) Jeff is truly in a class of his own.

. . . Laird Zerfas was just 11 in 1975 and then he took the decade off to go modeling.

Jeff Clark is definitely still charging...and, he's an all around nice guy every time that I've chatted with him...
Only surfed with him once out there and he was positive and helped me with the lineup...it was a small day, though...only 4X + OH...;-)

I don't know how he tolerates the crowds and the circus that Mavs has become, after surfing it alone for a couple of decades...YIKES!!!

No wonder that there was only one guy out at Todos the other day...they were ALL at Mavs...;-)

p.s. Your buddy got some great shots starman...
Mahalos...{:~)

Mavericks: As Good As It Gets

  Yes!  Glad you asked.

Meanwhile the Singularity is spewing forth precious gems.  Here is a write up on Mavericks from Thursday that is quite spectacular.

I may be biased but it's rare that we get conditions as beautiful and easy on the eyes as Peahi.  Mavericks has it's own characteristics but beauty is not usually in the top 5 list of adjectives.  The photos, and story-line, in this summary from Surfline are truly stunning:

Here are two shots of some unknown guy, until now, Lucas Chumbo.  I think his mother would be proud.

OK so the singularity is getting weird, and maybe funny.

My TRACE keeps relying on me as a local Scout.  Within 15 minutes of uploading my surfing STATS they, TRACE, posts a report on Surfline.  This goes immediately below the Surfline camera for Mavericks.  I was not happy about this but I don't think that people are minding the shop.

So today I did a test and changed my name slightly to "Hunter FU Sterling."  Sure enough there is my new Scout report.  15.7 Waves per hour at Mavericks.  This is a horrifyingly high rate for a typical lay-down guy.  What are they to think?  Meanwhile the TRACE hasn't properly identified Denton's cove as different from Mavericks but this may work to my advantage.

Tomorrow for example it is going to be smaller and my wave count will go up.  I have to then wonder ::) what should my alias be???

"SUPmore LaydownLess"

"JeffClark ONaSUP"

"SurflineSays SUPMore"

The possibilities are endless.  Scroll down here: http://www.surfline.com/surf-report/mavericks-northern-california_4152/

There you go. Fixed. He was working on it for sure.

Story Line: I had a brief window and paddled out for what would be << 1 hour session. . . . Jeff Clark paddles out and then Haley Fiske (3 of us on SUP's)...

Meanwhile Haley catches a couple good ones and then gets the wave of the day.  He drops on a beautiful face makes his bottom turn and then proceeds down the line.  He looks up to see what he thought would be an open face turn into pure vertical wall.  OMG!  He runs for the flats and then Kabooom!  Haley goes down.  He said the beating was so bad he didn't even remember losing his paddle.  It just disappeared.  Greg Long then raced in on a Jet Ski, Haley grabbed the ski and said "Go, go get me out of here."

This just popped out of the singularity:

Here is an edit by Powerlines Productions, Curt Myers.  This is one of the better edits I have ever seen on Mavericks.  Originally posted on Surfline.

The thumbnail set to Luca Padua.  He is a local Half Moon Bay'er just turned 15 years old in December.  He is one to watch out for.

Those to surf Mavericks before they could drive were: Jay Moriarty, Anthony Tashnick, Nic Lamb and now Luca Padua.  They made a movie about Jay, Anthony and Nic have both won Mavericks in 2005 and 2016 respectively.  More on Luca to come.
