Jimmy Lewis 9'11 Kwad
« on: December 04, 2016, 10:24:54 AM »
Anyone Zoners have the 9'11 Kwad? Just wondering what it is like to flat water paddle. Have a friend who's a prone surfer, and wants to get into SUP. He's around 190lbs, wants performance board for surfing, but would like to flat water paddle from time to time.

It's one of the few JL boards I haven't ridden yet. Anyone able to compare it to the Hanalei?

Thanks

I have the 8'7 Kwad and love it.  It paddles pretty well for such a short board.  I can only imagine the 9'11" paddles even better. It's a great surfing sup and what it is designed for, but in a pinch no shorter flat paddles would be fine.   Mine is floaty and very stable, so I think your friend would be fine on the 9'11". I am 180 lbs
Hobie Raw 8'10"
Jimmy Lewis Kwad 8'7"
Naish Hover 95 liter 5'7"

About paddling surf SUP's on flat-water..
For years I paddled flat-water on my surf SUPs, cuz that was all I had.... and I loved it.

For a while, my only board was an 8'10.... and I paddled 5-6 mile sessions, many times a week.
I had many 9'5's and they were also excellent in flat-water.

The Kwad will be just fine in flat-water.... and it will teach him some good technique at the same time.

Have had mine for two winters.  I like it.  It is a dome deck so perhaps tippy for some.  I'm used to it.  On a sloppy surface I'm challenged.  10 mph is about my limit whether on or off shore.  Love the way it rides waves.  Have paddled a distance from one spot to another, about a mile or so, and it paddled well flat water.  I'm the same weight, 190 and 66yrs.

If your bud is young and fit and can surf, that's too large a board.

9'2 Stun Gun would be a better choice.

Thanks guys,

Surf is pretty weak up here, a big day is chest high, and there's is not much power in the waves. So that's why most of us here are on larger boards. I'm on a 9'5 Striker and it's one of the smaller SUP's in the line up. Plus, when the surf is good, he'll be back on the prone board again.

I can't say enough great things about my Striker.  It's great for mush busting.

I wasn't impressed with my 9 5 Striker at first. We have a lot of choppy days and I was constantly getting the nose catching when paddling into waves. If I stepped back too much to lift the nose I missed the wave....too forward I would be worried about the nose going under. I thought the centre fin was too much too.

Then I had good clean waves and a nice face......wow...chalk and cheese....it all clicked. I have put in a 7  inch centre fin and it goes better....fantastic board. I'm going to try it as a true thruster next too. I still would like a little more rocker in the nose and subtle concave and then think it would be the best one board quiver around. Comes in a quad now...that's cool.
