Small wave in Hanalei on 8 10 Speed
« on: November 10, 2016, 01:02:52 PM »
My buddy got  a video of me riding a small wave by the pier in Hanalei. Not a great video, but does show how easily the Speed catches waves

Tom, great video, getting me stoked.  I'll be on Kauai and at Hanalei in February.  Where'd you get the Speeed?  Do you have any thoughts or advice for board rentals?  Thanks!

There are a few rental spots in town that are ok but not great. Seems like most places rent for $40 a day and $30 if over 4 days.
Good spots are middles or the bowl, ask for info. The video was right next to the pier which is a beginner spot

That was a nice 25 second ride on that wave.

Maine, search the Kauai threads. Not much has changed there. (A few new boards every year). If you ride a custom, bring a board, but if you ride a production board there are enough rentals. Nothing too short, but they have 9'0" usually.

I'll be back in January I think so I'll post up a report. I'd love for someone to rent BluePlanet or Sunova boards up there so I could stop flying mine.

Thanks Tom and SurfCowboy for the info. I will search the Kauai threads again too.

Beginner's breaks are good.  If you guys are aware of other more beginner, SUP friendly spots (besides the pier) in Hanalei or Poipu that you can share, I'd appreciate it.

You will find that Kauai is not the spot to go looking for spots. Super localized, good people, but they protect their own. That town is sort of their concession to SUP. But, it's great and if the point or middles is small enough for you (be honest with yourself) go. If it's too big, you can basically work your way around the bay from the pier and it gets bigger, faster and more hollow. Great place to split your time with a longboard or short board too. I've been learning to longboard and I really upped my game there. I've got family there and know a lot of locals now and I've never been invited to SUP any other spots on the North Shore.

There are a couple of spots down South (Kalapaki is one ) they are fun but nothing amazing.

Great people but know your etiquette and respect the locals and the place. It's one in a million, we have to protect it.
