I'm far far from being an expert and the Sidewinder is pretty easy to catch waves with.  I'm at 145 lbs.  The pads were drawn and hand-cut by me.

Good News Bad News Weekend...

The good news: My crossover deck pad was finished & I was only charged $50 through West Coast Paddle Sports.

The bad news: Last night I discovered a HUGE crack in my 9'2" Super Simmons. Don't even know how it got there. I paddled out yesterday and had a great morning w/ decent surf.  Was able to paddle over some decent white wash & felt really comfortable. I don't think it was already cracked because it definitely would've taken on water. I know I did not drop it and I'm the only one handling it. I lay it on its side in our downstairs living room so not sure if someone knocked it over. But this has to be a pretty big drop on concrete to do damage like that right? I weighed it & it hadn't take on water. I just don't know how or when it happened. Took the short board this morning & caught some small waves, but fell a lot as it was only my second time using (115L) it. So now I'm forced to use the small board & want my 9'2" back for the big surf that's coming in. Is this crack even fixable?? Is it possible to crack your rail wiping out w/ your paddle?

Oh no!!  That's much more than a crack, that's a major ding.  I guarantee you that there is water in your board now.  Best to drain it really well, and fix the damage before you take it out again.

You think it's fixable? I weighed it last night & it was what it's been weighing 22 lbs. So I have a feeling it happened sometime after my morning session. Not sure though. Bummed out cause I'd know if I did it. It is a pretty bad ding. I wasn't planning on taking it out again. Going to drop if off at somewhere so it can hopefully get i fixed. If for some reason it cant be repaired, not sure I want to continue on this short board for the winter so might have to jump on a custom board now. You know how much surf shops normally cost to repair dings like this?

Nate, it's definitely fixable but I'd get it done by a pro.  If you're in SoCal I recommend Molly Logan.  She's a shaper and repair specialist based in OC (Westminster), and she's done two major fin box repairs for me as well as cleaning up somebody else's mistakes. Totally worth it.

I'd guess this ding would cost around $50 from somebody good.

Good looking out dude! I googled her & she has great ratings on Yelp & FB. OC is about 90 minutes away from me. I'm just happy it can be done. Maybe I'll drive up there this weekend.  Gonna check w/ a few places in SD first. Thx again.

Big board is being repaired & will be done Wed. I have my 8'6" board in the car today to paddle after work. On my lunch break I went out to my car and noticed small water drops on the board. Obviously from a crack.  I haven't used the board since my 3 hour session on Tuesday. I've read on here people say to keep your windows up & the heat will evaporate the water out of your board. How many days should I do this to ensure all the water is out. I'm going to swap boards next Wed. and have it fixed professionally. Just means I can't paddle until Thursday which SUCKS!! Any suggestions on how many days I should leave it locked up in the car/sun? I honestly didn't even see this crack or feel that water could get in or out.

Dings are an unfortunate part of life--don't let it bug you too much.  Some would say put a vacuum on it to make sure it's dry, but for small stuff I've let it sit for awhile and then check by putting it in the sun under close supervision to see if it continues to bubble.  You can also just suck at the leak to get a sense of how much water is in there--if I taste a lot of salt, then it's a problem but if I start tasting resin/foam that's a good sign.

Doesn't look bad enough to miss a session though.  If the surf is good, put a sticker on it and go--won't make it any worse.

Where did you wind up going to get the board repaired?  If you are in SD there is no need to drive 90 minutes to get good work done.

Ding King in Encinitas does work as good as anyone I've seen - not always fast, but pretty near perfect.

I'll tape it up & maybe let it sit for a week after I get my board back.

Molly was full w/ boards & didn't have any room so I just took it to this place in Claremont - Joe Ropers Surfboard & Repair.

I had a few more cracks then just that big one & they're replacing the fin boxes. $150 and I pick it up Wed.
