Alaska Airlines welcome home surprise
« on: October 27, 2016, 06:36:04 PM »
I just got back from a SUP vacation with a week in Kauai and a week in Maui . This is what I found when I opened my SUP bag. I have a complaint into Alaska. we'll see where it goes.

Wow dude that sucks big time. I guess we can all try to learn from it by taking pics of our boards before checking them in.  That's terrible. Keep us posted on what happens a) Flight voucher b) cut a you a check or c) they're assholes & don't do anything about it. The better compensate something.  Good luck.

Always open and check surfboards IN THE AIRPORT upon arrival. Much easier to claim.

Photos while packing is a good idea.

That is just awful. Looks like your quiver of sups you took on your vacation ran into Alaska Airlines 800 pound baggage handlers commonly referred to "bull in the china shop" types. I truly hope AA makes it right with you monetarily so you get to purchase new replacement sups do to the damage they caused for you.

Last North Shore trip I asked the Alaska attendant at the counter if they would be careful with my nicely wrapped and padded board. "Of course!" she said with a smile. Had quite a repair session before I could even go surfing....

That looks like too much damage to be unintentional. A scumbag friend of a friend who was a baggage handler in Boston was bragging while drunk at a party one time about how he and his fellow baggage handlers upon getting any luggage that was awkward or heavy would deliberately try to trash it....he said it was common practice..... :o >:(. When I told him what I thought about he and his fellow workers he quickly shut up. I called the airline and the local news station but nothing ever came of it that I saw.

I learned one thing about baggage handlers, they don't get paid a lot. Human nature being what it is, given the task of handling heavy baggage they are going to take the path of least resistance. Heavy bags go on the bottom of the luggage cart and every thing else gets piled on top. Light bags go on top of the pile. I'm not sure if you packed the boards together or separately but it sometimes helps to try and lighten the load. But that is some serious damage and the baggage handles certainly were assholes that day.

That's a total disgrace. You'll have to give us an update once the claim is resolved.

Ugh, that's hard to look at.

Keep us posted, hopefully you get a satisfactory resolution, and I for one would love a guide to know what to do if that ever happened to me.

Who's loading those things? Grizzlies?
Not likely. They'd at least take a bear minimum of care.
