Northwest can opener. Had a few, also tinkler tail. All more trouble than they were worth and relegated to the dustbin--or a few fences in Rowena and Maui. Modern boards are pretty straightforward. Funny how that worls.

Yes, funny how that works.

I'm pretty careful in new sports to hang back and be patient and wait for the pendulum of extreme designs to swing a few times. Once a few swings done the center becomes pretty clear.

experimenting is cool, I just let others do the first few rounds for me

The surf culture has been pretty resistant to change over the years.  It blows my mind how long toxic, fragile poly boards have been around (happy to see Firewire, Sunova, Lib Tech and others push those boundaries).  Sign me up as a guinea pig for progress. I feel like the past 5 or 6 years have been a bit of a renaissance in SUP design and I've really enjoyed trying out new concepts.  Even though a SIMS isn't all that crazy in SUP anymore, it sure felt like it when I first saw one and they ended up being game changers for me.  And I've loved the results of my asym Infinity and the side cut experiment on my Kronos.  Sure, traditional shapes will always be the foundation of design and you can't argue that years of refinement have acted like a form of evolution, but there's so much room for growth and experimentation with SUP shapes as we try to find those sweet spots in the tug of war between balance/stability and surfability--sometimes it's those random mutations that jump things to the next level (queue Simon Anderson circa 1980).

back in my old santa cruz days it was a pin tail on a spear  shaped board.  then my favorite in my long board days were Ben aips  stinger with a swallow tail. Now I think rounded pin pretty broad as Pono says  helps strengthen out my  rails and gives me geezer balance.
