Wim Hof Method
« on: October 25, 2016, 02:58:47 PM »
The Wim Hof method piqued my interest when Laird Hamilton mentioned he was using it to maximize breath holding.

Clay referenced the class on his site.

What is the story?  Is there a Cliffs Notes version  ::)

Laird lost all credibility with me when his advice included breathing in one nostril and out the other as a training technique.

Now I get it. I always feel good after a surf session in brisk water. I don't like wet suits either. There is a force compelling me to surf.... in winter.. Be cold my friends!
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

There are some good abbreviated YouTube videos. This is the best thing to watch.

http://www.icemanwimhof.com/vice-documentary

It's basically a breathing technique along with some mindfulness work. Strip away the mumbo jumbo and it makes some sense. The results are pretty interesting and some of them can be proven in a lab so there's that.

Passing out seems to be sort of a rite of passage. I've done the exercise and it makes you feel something but I've yet to commit to the whole thing. I think the online course is $200, 30-40 days and an hour a day or something like that. I'd like to try it as an experiment myself.

I played around with his breathing methods a few times.  First try I did 15 deep breaths and then held my breath for two minutes without my brain begging for air till the very end.    Interesting how quickly you can richen your blood with o2.

There is a Joe Rogan show with him on,  he demonstrates his basic stuff.  WimHof is a nut,  but seems legit,  I like him.

Aloha, thanks for starting this thread, I'll post more when I get back from a a trip.

I am sharing this testimony because it had a powerful influence on me, hearing Doug's recovery brought tears to my eyes.  I'm the tall bearded guy with jacket behind Wim:

Denton, the vice segment will explain a lot if you have the 40 mins to watch it.

But the basic thing is, he believes that its possible for us to effect our autonomic system via breathing exercises, primarily through the release of adrenaline.  Basically a way to control the mind/body linkage.

I haven't tried it, but what I like about the guy is there's no spiritual mumbo jumbo attached, and he fully admits that scientific research needs to be done to validate and quantify the results.
