That was fun. Kai the ultimate ambassador for almost all water sports. SUP is sooo easy and fun, but you might want to practice a little before you do it at Ocean Beach.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Part of an interview of Zane post race with Ian Boyd holding the camera. I would expect to see the usual professional production of the race by RedBull in a couple of months.

The 2016 board has more rocker than the 2017 one though, so if he's not using a 2017 production shape, maybe that's why, given how rough the conditions were. Zane was talking about waist to chest bumps out there and it being hard to stay on the board. Rocker would be your friend in those conditions.

Really? Haven't seen 2017 but 2016 board in water has the nose about 2" off the water!!! Pretty hard to go lower!

Any idea if they took 12'6 boards?
I think they were on 12-6s, weren't they?

I saw a video review of the Maliko that said I think that the 2017 has a little less tail rocker than the 2016.

The deck pad of Kai's board didn't look like last years' model to me - but I'm not a Maliko expert. The OnItPro Instagram vids show it fairly clearly.

But we need a Naish expert to chime in. Where's DJ when you need him? :)

Going by a photo I saw on another forum, it looks to be either a 2017 Maliko with a 2016 paint job (i.e. pre 2017 prototype) or a custom board with an entirely new nose that never saw the light of day.

Cool video Clay!  Thanks for putting that together.  Kai and Casper (2 Naish riders) really take a beating heading back out starting around 3:45.  And Casper is lucky not to killed by his board at 4:00 with that forward dive move!

The thing that gets me about these kind of back and forth through the big surf races, is the boards they use. Seriously, They could paddle big 12' guns with nose rocker and do fine in the messed up distance part, but actually surf the waves with a proper board. I guess trying to surf big waves with a board that is not designed to surf big waves is more fun to watch. Maybe they should ramp it up at Maverick's and have those guys try to surf it with 14' race boards? Now that would be great to watch.........live... 3 days after it happened.

It's an interesting point: would these guys have been any slower on eg. 12ft guns? Certainly, when water gets real choppy like Zane was describing (waist to chest bumps), a linger board/raceboard loses nearly all of it's advantage. The question is how much advantage would a big surf SUP give going in and out of the surf? It is still going to be difficult no matter what you are on.

Looks as though at least one person at OB had the same thought on board size & shape choice ....

....from the 5:30 mark of Clay's full clip in the link he provided.
Me: 6'1"/185...(2) 5'1" Kings Foil/Wing Boards...7'10 Kings DW Board...9'6" Bob Pearson "Laird Noserider"...14' Lahui Kai "Manta"...8'0" WaveStorm if/when the proning urges still hit.

I think that's a Coreban Alpha 12-6. If so, it's a downwind-style 12-6 race SUP not a surf SUP.

Area 10.  You're right that is an alpha.

An 12'6" alpha was my one board quiver for a few years when I was getting started including my one and only surf board.  It surfed ok and could be controlled pretty well on the wave. Pintail keeps the board locked into the face pretty well.   Nothing like a real surf sup but not bad.  Much better than a dedicated race board in the surf though.

In non surf I found it was at least a couple minutes slower per mile than a board like an SIC FX14.

Jack of all trades, master on none.

Interesting that the racer at 5:30 went that route.  I wonder where he placed.

Great video clay! It's good to see how these guys flail and recover. I certainly picked up a few tips on how to deal with heavy water. Thanks for sharing.
