Pining over a love lost
« on: October 17, 2016, 06:17:52 PM »
I think about this board often. When Bill did the Ke Nalu 2008 Board Showcase (when Ke Nalu was just an online mag) Ed Angulo brought out a 11-11 prototype board that I absolutely loved, a standout favorite  on a day that I tried 15 different boards. Unfortunately it never made it into production. The 11-11 Guhd was slightly different, still good but somehow didn't have the same mojo for me.
I was reminded of the board today....it's in the latest Standup Journal on page 78. Ed is with the Maui crew getting ready to do a Maliko run on it. What an awesome big guy board that was. LOL...note the early attempt at rail tape to protect all these demo boards we had..... :). It looks like I could've used some protection myself that day...my wife noticed the cuts on my arm that I still have scars from....I have at least one scar from every visit to Maui.

I have to wonder what I would think of this board today....looks thick in that profile pic.

I've thought about it before. Maybe someday, Ed's in FLA now so maybe ask him do it sometime when I go down that way.

Sounds like you never got over your "first love". For your sake, it will have to be "custom made" and I hope someone will built it for you and you eventually get that board.
Blue Planet Duke: 10'5" x 32" x 4.5" @ 190 Liters (2 Dukes)
Sup Sports Hammer: 8'11" x 31" x 4" @ 140 Liters
SUP Sports One World: 11'1" x 30" x 4.5" @ 173 Liters
CJ Nelson Parallax: 9'3" x 23 1/2" x 3 3/16" @ 78.8 Liters (prone surfing longboard; Thunderbolt Technologies build in Red construction)

My 1st love is my starboard 12-6....still have her. Though she is needing some loving repairs at the moment. One of the great things about opportunities like that to demo such a wide range of boards is the apples to apples look you get. I was able to demo the Angulo side by side with a 12-6 that was there. Both great boards but the Angulo is more stable which at the time was really critical for me since my balance was so screwy. I was able to surf it more confidently and I think that was the biggest difference. If I was to get it shaped today I don't think I'd want it so thick.

Stoney, Ed Angulo is now in FL. He will make anything you want. And you can get it glassed by AJ.

A custom Angulo that's bulletproof!

A sample is attached..

Dims : 8'10" x 31" x 3.75" 128 liters..

I am sure he could recreate the lost love, maybe a little sweeter!

Similar in some respects but much narrower, the 11-11 was 31" wide. I wish we had stood the boards on their tales and taken the pictures from a set point instead of laying them down and shooting at an angle, the grid would have been accurate that way. The actual specs were listed in the page for each board but it would have been nice to get them to agree.
As good as the Avanti is for BIG guys I think it would have actually been too stable for me. It was a fine line having a board that I could paddle but still challenged my balance. I would have had an easier time of it when I 1st started but it was the struggle to stand that gave me the balance therapy I needed at the time. I did almost throw in the towel after 3 months of falling in constantly on the 12-6 x 30.5 before it finally clicked...glad I'm stubborn.... :)

That was an awesome board. I asked Ed to sell me that board, but he said it was a prototype and he still needed it. A few years later I ran into a lady on Oahu riding it. My timing was off, she told Ed she wanted a stable SUP about six months after I asked and he sold it to her dirt cheap.

I think the 10'4" Foote Triton is everything that board was and more. The Angulo just like the wonderful girl I missed at 25. Met her ten years later and she was a fat shrew (I wish). If anything she was more beautiful and intelligent than ever. Drats. Okay, that analogy doesn't work.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

I agree with you on the 10-4 being all that and more. I didn't have the immediate connection with the 10-4 that I did with that one though. My comment on making it thinner is basically aimed at the rails being more refined if I had a version made today...something the Foote obviously already has. Nice thing about the Foote is that it is still stable at 34 but the rails bury easily. If it came down to having only one board the choice would be easy. The Foote makes me look good.... :)

I like this topic. I miss my 9'6 Infinity Carver. I was too cool to realize just how pleasant actual glide can be...even it's only a foot of it or so...shouldn't have sold it. Great all around board and my first custom SUP.

Nice to hear from you Eric...  ;) It's been a while. Life gets in the way, I know.

The Foote makes me look good.... :)

Yeah, me too. I think my 9' 0" Foote does too, but not in the same way. When I lose my balance and stagger around on the 10'4" people say stuff like "that was really cool, very stylish". On the 9'0" it looks like what it was. People say stuff like "Wow, you were totally out of control." Same situation, different board.
