Re-repairing my Starboard 12-6 cruiser
« on: October 06, 2016, 07:53:45 AM »
I've never been fully satisfied with the repair that was done to my 12-6 when I snapped it. Basically glued back together then wrapped completely in 6oz cloth. It took a board that I used to love to surf and turned it into a heavy barge. I accepted it because a friend had done it and I wasn't planning on surfing it much anymore anyway. It was to be an expedition/distance board (had 4 plugs put in the forward deck)  something tough I could loan without worrying. 4 years later....the glass is delaminating around the fins and I was able to peel up a large section. I want to get it done right this time. I wish there was an Eva (boardlady) equivalent on the east coast. This is the original Starboard 12-6 (2007 model)...all wood veneer top and bottom so fixing it won't be easy. I'd like to restore it to as close to original as possible but I think it's beyond my meager skills. Back when it was repaired I had talked to a few guys in the area and nobody gave me a warm fuzzy that they would be as detailed in the repair as Eva was...everyone basically said they would do the same....glue it and wrap it.

Any thoughts on getting it done? I don't mind paying a premium (within reason) to get it done right. I loved this board before the repair and it also has a lot of sentimental value to me. The plan would be to surf it occasionally when conditions are right (caught the longest wave of my life on this board), still use it as a expedition board but not loan it out, and find a place of honor to display it when it's not being used. Maybe I should write to Starboard and see what they recommend?

If you were here on the west coast id do it.  Post up some pics. Peeling of the glass is caused by poor prep work.

I'll grab some pics when I get a chance. I thought the delam might be because of the oxidation on the wood surface underneath. It's considerable across all of the surface and has gotten worse since the repair, not sure how much it can be prevented other than keeping sun exposure to a minimum.....something I haven't done a good job of. I don't really have any complaints about the work he did (for cheap $) other than the fact that it was so heavy after. Considering how I treat my gear it held up reasonably well. I'll be much more thoughtful after this repair, get a bag for transport, keep it inside when not in use and such.
