Kings SS Model Ordered!!
« on: October 04, 2016, 07:10:03 PM »
It has been about 1 and half years since I have got into SUP.  My board is an 11'6" Bote Drift inflatable that I originally got to fish off of.  I got out fishing quite a bit, but also learned that I just really enjoyed my time paddling on the water.  After my first summer I really wanted to get a 14 ft board for all conditions, but decided that I would go one more summer before deciding on what board to get next.  This summer I didn't paddle quite as long distances because I did not have the same amount of free time, but I ended up getting out in the surf a lot more when the chances came on Lake Michigan.  I could catch waves decently with the inflatable, but turning wasn't much of an option.  After a few of these sessions I decided to pull the trigger on a Kings SS Model.

The board will also have an orange deckpad that I am hoping to customize a bit.  We will see if have the guts to cut into the pad on my brand new board once it gets here though.

The SS is a super fun board, from knee-knocker to about head high wide shoulder reef breaks.  The thinner rail at the tail and narrowed tail making it a snap to turn and cut back.  The fun part is stepping to the nose and cruising across the face of the wave.

As for cutting into the new pad ... do it! I done it to my SS.

A great board! Mine is 9'4" x 30.75" x 4.25". One foot to OH. I like orange 🍊 pads also, but do not have Ben's incredible skills!

This beauty affectionately known as the Monsterpiece!!

Dave makes great boards. Shaped and V-bagged by him right here in the USA. Just saw him at the PPG talking to people about his boards. Very approachable and down to earth. Makes some fast, super light flat water unlimiteds too.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Congrats, I'm sure you'll love that board.  I have never surfed a King's but am hoping to have one eventually.  I spent a couple months in Cardiff (Encinitas), and a lot of the best guys out there surfed on Dave's boards.  Of all the surf SUPs I've seen - and I've seen a lot - a King's board looks the most like a real surfboard.  No big, chunky rails. Definitely made for surf performance no matter what the size/volume.

Love it! I have a similar longboard shape on order. If I hadn't met the shaper I'm using, I probably would have gone with the Kings SS too. I drooled for months over pics of RATbeachrider's. Those rails!  Looking forward to a ride report.

Another couple of pics just for fun of the SS.

The tail is really thin, and the rails foiled. A B-I-G surfboard!!

Is that an SS mrbig?  Looks more like a crossover type design than the standard SS longboard style.

SS Especial! The nose was pulled in a little from the stock outline. Kinda like the differences between a Laird Surf and the Surf Hybrid.

And a few other modifications that are especial! Mostly pertaining to bottom contours.

Dave is very easy to work with. As you can see from my signature I have several of his boards. My "special needs" regarding width (need wider than most), thin (skinny guy liters not needed), and short ( ex short board contest surfer) have led to a great relationship and boards that have been designed specifically for me!

The SS Especial morphed from a small wave summer board into a winter big wave board. Delivery on customs varies. The Monsterpiece wandered around in a truck for a while, took a side trip to Orlando! LOL!

What's everyone think of the handles Dave puts on his boards? The ones I've looked at were really small. I doubt my hand would fit in it with gloves or mitts on. Does he offer an alternative? Would he install my handle of choice if I bought a custom board? Of course then he'd have to add a vent plug.

I'm not considering a board right now. I was just wondering.

I "surfed" on over to the King's website and the SIDEWINDER and WCT models caught my eye in the 9'x30" length and width. I might have to mosey on over to YouTube and see if they have any videos on these two models.

Got it!  I have a 9'2" SS so at first glance yours looked like a completely different model :)  I'm about 10 minutes from Kings so no issues with delivery  :D
