Spider Bites
« on: September 26, 2016, 11:48:29 AM »
I received my new Hammer sup on June 22. I had only ridden it on my subdivision's private lake three times before I got bit by a brown house spider on June 30. In just a three hours, a pin prick bite turned into a flesh eating wound the size of a large green pea. I called my soft tissue surgeon since we're good friends and he has operated on me on three different occasions. He told me to go to my local hospital's emergency room but do not check myself in. My surgeon was operating that day on a few patients and in between patients, he saw me in the emergency room.

He told me I caught the bite wound early and he could take care of it. I thought my small flesh eating bite wound would heal (with antibiotics) in two weeks time, three weeks at the most. In reality, this bite wound took a full 8 weeks to heal. I was finally cleared to get back on the water on August 30. My surgeon told me I was lucky. He told me he had one patient who got bit by a brown recluse spider and that patient didn't seek help until 24 hours went by and by that time, the patient was in serious trouble with a flesh eating bite wound. My surgeon had to perform two operations on him (skin grafts) and it took a full "12 months" for his bite wound to heal. If you ever get bit by a spider, don't take a spider bite lightly because it can cost you in the long run and in some cases, amputation and also loss of a life.

So I have been on the water riding my Hammer sup starting on Sept 1. But on Sept 9, I came down with my usual September ragweed allergy and I have been coughing, sneezing my fool head off since that time which has kept me off the water since Sept 9. This is the worst summer I have ever had. I will try and make a report on my Hammer for flat water padding soon.

I feel lucky that I have been able to make consistent efforts mostly over the last couple of years, barring my broken rib a few years ago.  My twisted knee kept me from progressing for eight months, but didn't keep me off the water, and I was able to progress some until I was able to compress that knee again.

Sounds like you have had a lot of bummer-i-zation lately.

Damn!.....I'm going to have to stop being nice to spiders. While my wife tends to freak out I've always let them be...figure they do more good than damage....but losing TOW to a spider bite changes the equation.... :)

The estimate is we are never in our life more than six to ten feet from a spider somewhere.

I also know someone who almost died from a spider bite after simply picking a piece of firewood up.

Plus, there was a robbery here recently carried out by eight armed robbers, so it doesn't take much brains to figure out that spiders were behind that as well.

So I guess they didn't want to jump to any conclusions, and ruled out the 10 armed Middle Eastern's? If Trump gets to build his wall, at least we won't have to worry about them anymore....
Initial reports stated that they there were Camels involved, but that was later proved to be a Myth.

+1 on both!  And just be thankful you don't look like her, what I mean of course and it's not a streatch at all, is that you don't have her diminished stamina...

Looking forward to your complete report and recovery, NW.

I live in the state of Texas in the US. Another little goodie about my state, we have flesh eating bacteria named"Vibrio" which lives in saltwater. One has to be careful they don't have any open cuts because Vibrio is really nasty and quite dangerous if you contract it.

It used to be that snakes, spiders and scorpions were limited to certain regions, but now with all the various forms of transportation available, they can travel to just about anywhere and live for many months outdoors and/or years indoors.

Speaking of scorpions. I live in the piney woods of southeast Texas just 30 miles north of downtown Houston, Tx. We're not supposed to have scorpions in our area since it is too humid for them here. But, during this 9 months, I've killed two scorpions inside my home. They were green colored ones too.

Your deal makes my deal look like a walk in the park.  I had a double digit wasp sting attack in the Tahoe area.  But it was only a month before I started a come back.  We have those brown recluse spiders here in Hawaii as well, tons of them.  Glad you're on the mend

Those yellow jackets are all over California. There are a couple of nests around my house in Pleasanton, but I only see them when we have our neighborhood get togethers outside. I have also seen them all over picnic areas in the Sierras and on hikes.

Your experience sounds pretty dangerous. I didn't know they could be that threatening. I suppose it would behoove to carry a small spray bottle of fast acting insecticide in case they are around.
