Best $300 Racing Paddle?
« on: September 24, 2016, 03:35:49 PM »
I need a new paddle, but I can't justify spending more than $300. I want something full carbon and I'm looking for a blade size in the mid 80s. What can you recommend? Where I live, demo'ing is not an option, so I will have to buy based on feedback alone.
I'm 145lbs, 5'11 and paddling a 14' race board. I'm not racing, but want something light and stiff. Thanks
I know the Lahui Kai boards were a good deal for their performance, but how's their carbon paddle?

Check the Distressed Mullett classifieds as there are a few Quickblades on there for less than $300. Trifecta and VDrive are their top paddles new are $500+

I forgot to include that I'm doing mostly flatwater and some downbreezing. My current paddle volume is a mystery, but I know it's 7.8" wide and 11*.
Thanks for the tip PDLSFR about Distressed Mullet. I spent some time on their site, but could not find anything. The paddles were either cut too short or the blades were way to high volume for me (or a combo of both).

Use code qb20 for 20 percent off and get a free paddle bag

A 320 $ qb trifecta or v drive is a score

Check out the Werner Trance (fka 'Nitro") -  in one piece they typically retail for $308, and with a little judicious online shopping you should be able to avoid shipping and tax.

Have you tried the QB vector net V-Drive or Trifecta?  I have tried searching the forum but it seems like the discussions all relate to the regular all carbon V-Drive and Trifecta as opposed to this carbon and fiberglass hybrid version.  I am curious as to anyone's experience because they do seem like a pretty good deal.

Yep this is what I'd do. The 81 v-drive, probably. Although I'm liking my 86 trifecta more and more as well.

Incidentally, it's funny how as your technique at the catch improves, you can go really quite small in the blade and still pull like hell without the blade slipping. I used to find my 86 trifecta too small. But I've changed my stroke and now it feels like I could go even smaller - I'm yanking on the thing so much my whole body aches but it won't slip. It's fast, but sheeesh it's tiring too.

I love the look of those vector QB paddles. Saw many of them being used at the PPG. I've had FG/carbon QBs before and they are better than many other brands' full carbon paddles IMO.

Ever since I started adding a little Johnny Puakea to my stroke I find I need a smaller blade. the 95 Konihi is way too much, the 84 is borderline too much. The Mna 90 remians fine for downwind, though if I clean up my stroke I bet that needs to be smaller too. I'm surfing with the Mana with the shaft longer than normal and it rocks.

To answer the question, if you get started with KeNalu you just change your blade to suit your development or conditions. Prices have crept up pretty high, but you never have to start over.
