Noseriding the 10' Sunova Style
« on: September 22, 2016, 08:15:10 PM »
My Sunova Style arrived!
10' x 29  at 130 liters..... super thin foiled rails.
Yikes at my current 229 lbs, I figured it would be quite a challenge at 29" wide..... not so! Very stable considering it was mostly underwater with me on it!

Poor video quality... zoomed way out to make sure to capture the waves, so I had to crop the vids so much, they look like crap.

I just went to the nose and stayed there till the waves ground into 5" of water.... I was testing the boards noseriding potential.
It was amazing.... the tail is sooo narrow, with a ton of "Kick".... plus I threw in a wide based, 10" fiberglass fin..... the tail NEVER let go, all day!

I was easily turning, climbing and dropping without leaving the nose, the nose wouldn't sink.....this is going to be a fun board!

In good waves, this board is a definite "Tip" rider! I'm going to have to up my game to explore this board  :)

Rick, great shots!

Your description of the board being very stable considering it was mostly underwater, is exactly how I feel on my low volume noserider.  I'd be very interested to see how your balance feels (for the first few minutes) once you return to a more floaty board.

When I switch back to a more corky board, it takes me a good couple of minutes to adjust and I stand there jittering like a newborn calf.

well, if anyone wants the XL version of this -- same length but a little wider, with 139L -- I know where you can get one for pretty darn cheap given how expensive these sweet rides are at retail.  belongs to my buddy paul, who once and for all has decided that longboard SUPing just ain't his thing.  More's the pity, ifn you ask me.
good stuff on that video, creek, very stylish!
meanwhile, here's my latest contribution to SUP noseriding.  Not nearly as sauve as creek's, but by hook and crook, i do manage to get up there.  this one's on a 10' jimmy lewis BnB.

On the last wave you set the edge, cut stalled and set yourself and the board up for noseriding.  All the other versions were just trimming and walking up, which honestly is the same exact problem I have.  Self awareness of what needs to happen first...like stalling, is my bane.  I still get so excited just to be flowing down the face that I miss key steps.

You're definitely locking the whole cross step nose ride sequence down and by showing the failures the vid tells the story of how your body position improves until you're at the tip.  I'd be happy to get dunked 5 times for one good ride like that. Looked like a beautiful day to have both successes and failures. That board looked sweet too.

bean: thanks, dude!
jim: you hit the nail square on when you said, "On the last wave you set the edge, cut stalled and set yourself and the board up for noseriding.  All the other versions were just trimming and walking up, which honestly is the same exact problem I have.  Self awareness of what needs to happen first...like stalling, is my bane.  I still get so excited just to be flowing down the face that I miss key steps."
those first two lines really drive something home that i'd never thought about before, which is the diff between trimming and walking and actually setting things up for an actual noseride.  i got five for a few seconds today, too, and realized that that excitement thing you mention is also a big problem.  i'm always frantically paddling, frantically turning, frantically trimming and frantically trying to get to the nose.  but when i slow the heck down, it makes all things better.  and, in my case, i know that to get slow i need to nip my excitement in the bud and that starts with paddling into the wave.  what i've done a few times and really feels good is to stop paddling into the wave earlier than normal.  i tend to paddle beyond what's necessary, which crunches everything that's to follow together.  anyway, i could go on, but enough.  i already feel like i'm hijacking creek's fine thead.  Sorry, STC!!!!

Nice vid Creek!
(as usual)
Looks like a great ride.
You were way up there.
Nice clean waves too.

I'd love to try the regular width Style - the 10' and the 10' 6".

Hopefully,  Tino will do another demo trip to Santa Cruz, CA.

Eric, exactly.   :D  My position, the crowds and onlookers, my own ego, and the thrill of the ride all work against what should be happening in my head (relax and allow the wave to tell you what to do next).
And to tie this into the vid posted by STC, He's a natural relaxer, stalls for the tip as if that's as easy as breathing, and when he get's up there he's got the board locked in, the paddle assisting his balance, and a silly grin on his face.  Sunova couldn't have asked for a better unpaid spokesman, and that he can surf nearly everything they make doesn't hurt either.

Very VERY nice Creek!!!  I love how you get up front and camp out!!!!   How do ha think it'd handle a little bit of chop??

I pulled the trigger on a JL B&B a couple of weeks ago as I thought one was available...turned out JL didn't have any more flat nose models...and none now avail until next Feb.  So, now I just might just have to try a Style after seeing this vid!!!!   I'll pm ya Erik!!

Creek rides again!!!  Never gets old!!!

Those look like Sharks waves.  The longboarders like Sharks in Santa Cruz for that reason, good venue to nose ride and take a suds bath.

Ha ha Erik.... no worries my friend, it is awesome to see your footage... and nice "5"!

we are following the same path.... I just made a "learning" video from todays trials in noseriding.... probably be read to post tomorrow on this thread.

The "tip" has a barrier in front of it..... a mental barrier.
I inched closer to it today..... peaked over
I ask myself "Why do you stop 5" from the end? What???? Are you afraid to fail?????
I guess in some way.... yes.
I like being close, so I'll stop there and enjoy the ride.......
but I really need to get over that and take a "trip to the Tip"

Too bad about Paul..... someone should jump on his board.
I can't exactly vouch for the XL version, but I have never felt a more solid noserider than mine..... the XL would be well worth looking into!
