Advice for "splint" on buckling board
« on: September 02, 2016, 09:39:39 AM »
I have a production demo 14x22 raceboard that developed a little buckle aft of the standing area. (I think it may have been a weak spot where the reinforced standing area met a less reinforced rear deck.) After riding it in waves the other day cracks appeared on either side of the buckle, and I reckon it's not safe to ride anymore. I hope to be able to fix / reinforce it with some sort of "splint" or "bridge" across the hinging area. The bottom deck is fine. Only the top deck has the dimple and cracks.

So far I have peeled off the deck pad. (See pic.) I'm having a really hard time getting the gummy deck pad residue off the deck of the board. Is there any better way to do it other than just scraping for hours with a paint scraper? I tried knives, razor blades, acetone, and sanding, but none of those worked.

Also, for the splint itself, I was thinking I'd sand down through the paint until I'm at the glass cloth or PVC or whatever the deck of this board is made from. Then I figured I'd get a couple layers of glass cloth to wrap over the upper deck of the board and about halfway down the rails to make my reinforecement. Then cover it back up with the deckpad. Do you reckon that would work?

I don't have any experience with Raceboard, but I have fixed a buckled Prowave and a prone Longboard.
Exactly the same... the bottom rocker was untouched... just the top and sides.

I took the glass off around the fold and cracks, then let it dry out.
Then I followed "The Board Lady" instructions.

I had never done it before and they both came out great. Not too hard, just step by step

Link to my threads.... although there is limited detail in them

Here are some pix of the area that I sanded the glass off and finished product

Thanks Supthecreek. I wouldn't have thought to sand all the way to foam over the buckle. Did you you sand all the way to foam on the rails, too, or just on the deck buckle?

To review, the total layers of cloth you used were 4 on the deck, and 2 on the rails?

I've exposed about a foot of deck both fore and aft of the buckle, so I have the option to extend the glass patch pretty far fore and aft. How far up and back would you recommend extending the glassing? Would you sand that entire area to foam, or have some new glass - old glass overlap on the areas further from the buckle?

Hi James

A lot will depend on if you have water in the board, it turned out that I didn't have any water inside...
but I felt it was best to remove and replace the "creased" foam.
I felt the compromised foam would remain a weak spot, so I sanded down to clean, undisturbed foam.
In the long board, I cut it out with a knife and Gorilla Glued blocks of foam in the void.... sanded, glassed.

Use jrandy's link to Eva's site.
Read. Everyone should.... she has this down to a science, and explains it very well.
Click around the repair section.... all the info you need is on her site.

As far as layer of cloth, try to find out what your board's layup is and duplicate that.
