Hong Kong 2nd International SUP Championships - 28 Aug 2016
« on: September 02, 2016, 07:38:43 AM »
Last weekend was Hong Kong's 2nd International SUP races presented by MVision and organised by The Hong Kong Stand Up Paddle Board Association (HKSUPBA www.hksupba.com) with great support from Naish and SIC, as well as a host of volunteers on Ham Tin Beach, in Sai Kung Country Park. There are some good write ups in SUPRacer http://www.supracer.com/2016-hong-kong-international-sup-championship/ and others, about Japanese No.1 Kenny Kaneko coming in ahead of Kai Lenny and Casper Steinfath in the 13 mile / 21km race. He really nailed it at the end and won by quite a margin.

Those of us competing in the 5 mile / 8 km race got to do a beach start with the elite racers, and what a privilege that was to be able to do that, and to see how fast they pulled away into the distance. Conditions were tough for all competitors with a side wind which increased throughout the race to such an extent that many did not finish the 21km and even some the 8km. We all had a blast though.

Great praise and thanks go to everyone who had a hand in bringing these elite racers to Hong Kong, and to the organisation on the day, which being a beach only accessible by boat or overland on foot, were immense.

The following pics are all screen grabs from GoPro footage using a borrowed 2013 Starboard All Star 14 x 27.5" which I think remarkably was the only SB on the beach.

Off-Shore, the board Kenny Kaneko is using in the pictures looks exactly like the board you wanted which is an FX shape but with a dug-out deck.
Did you get a close look at it?

I did not get to paddle it though...

Probably for the best... Should be super stable considering how stable the FX pro is at 25.

Great cover and pics, thanks for sharing!

Great video. Looking closely, this SIC board seems to have more nose volume and slightly more nose rocker than the FX, it also has the pin-tail.
Should be a great downwinder.

Did you get the story on that board?

Did you get the story on that board?

Only that it was a one off custom made board and Kenny won on it ;). I have to say it is a beautiful looking piece of equipment. Though I'm told it cannot be pivot turned as the tail sinks and the deck fills with water and the tail gets stuck. If you notice any of the FB pictures of the event and look at Kenny rounding the buoys, he stays up front.

Thanks for sharing the pictures and video Off-Shore. Why did so many dropout of that race?

The wind picked up a lot at the 1st downwind marker (2nd buoy) of the 21km / 13 mile elite race, and conditions got a little near impossible to paddle upwind / partially cross shore. The upwind marker buoy was hard to make out in the swell, and the organisers had a cut off time to get to it, and so pulled out 11 of the 17 before they got to the marker due to time. This was a good call, as some of the competitors could hardly walk up the beach when they got back. Mo Freitas had tweaked his back earlier and pulled out after rounding the first buoy probably realising the wind was picking up and a long slow one sided paddle upwind was not going to do him any favors. I was intending on doing the 21km / 13 mile race, and can only say I am glad I did the 8km / 5mile race (due to fitness) instead, as I also would have not made the time cut off, and would have got a DNF.
