Which fin on your DW board?
« on: August 28, 2016, 12:44:24 AM »
Interested to hear which fins you are using on your DW boards?

I have one specific DW board JL M14 and have settled on the Futures California DW fin.

Seems a good compromise on stability and surfability.

So.. Is that a question or an answer..  ;D

I think any fin is going to be better than the stock JL fin..  :)

My favorite DW fin right now is the new 8 or 9" FCS tooless longboard fin..

For downwind on the M-12'6, I'm using the 8" JL honeycomb light Blade II that came the board. It's fast, tracks well, turns well on a plane and sheds weeds nicely. I have no desire to try anything else.

For surfing, I've been using the 10" Futures Classic Longboard. I haven't decided yet if that's the best fin for surf but it makes sense that it would be. I may try something smaller at some point just to compare.

;D ;D ;D ;D you ain't wrong there re the stock JL fin.....it is a superb fin for stability and tracking and quite fast I guess.......but for surfing....ooops! I tried a few including dolphin fins which I use for just surfing small waves....but for DW I use the Futures. I like using diff fins so wondered what else folks are trying.

DJ .... are you using the Dolphin in all your DW boards ....even the new Maliko?

I had the stock JL Tracker on my M-14 and didn't like it. It tracked great but it was heavy and didn't turn well at all. The Blade II works way better. Not bad for surf either but not as good as the dolphin.

Try this link. The new ones are the same template only in the lighter honeycomb construction.

Yes.. The new Maliko fin is very nice but because it's so light I'm guessing it's not very durable and more of a race fin.. The need for board stacking doing DW'ers make the click in fins soooo conveniant.. I mostly use the blue 9" dolphin but recently bought the orange 8" dolphin tooless fin..

The Aercore JR/LA fin is also very good but feels a little drifty making turning easier but lacks a little stability.. Because I'm old and wobbly and often have my big camera rig on my board I'm after a little more stability than the Aercore gives..

Ive just performed surgery on my tracker, cut the back off and it now resembles the blade.  Waiting for a decent day to try it but it looks to be more in proportion.

For DW on the M-14 -> the SIC 8.3 is good
Bullet 14V2  - ditto
AS23 - the SIC 7.0
SB Touring carbon - the Race 23 OEM
Dom - the SB Race 23

These ones do not broach much angling down waves on those boards - so the ride is less technical and more forgiving.  And also agree the JL Tracker is very heavy and can broach across short period steep waves.
Fast is FUN!   8)
Dominator - Touring Pintail - Bullet V2 - M14 - AS23

Check out these fins from Cape Hatteras. The guys that make these fins are the real deal. Engineers that design the foils using fluid dynamics modeling. Then they are reproduced precisely using cnc manufacturing.

http://cncfins.com/

Travis Grant placed 2nd in the Maui to Molokai with their fin.

Lots more stuff on their Facebook page.

Fins shaped like that have been around for a while now (eg. the FCS Weedless). But they haven't proved particularly popular. They don't really give you any special benefit in any way, excepting that they are quite low surface area.

Several companies have taken windsurf shapes and turned them out for SUPs. It doesn't work well IMO because the speeds and forces at work, and the way the board is used, is totally different in SUP compared to windsurfing. If you want to look at fins from another discipline, you are much better off looking at surfboard fins IMO.

No-one is going to be applying fluid dynamics software to SUP fin designs because the software doesn't exist for SUPs. Everyone is just using various forms of trial and error, from a starting point that is little more than a guess based on experiences from wildly different vessels and applications (boats, kayaks, windsurfers, surfboards etc). So IMO beware of people telling you that their products are the result of the appliance of science because I don't think that for SUP the scientific principles exist, never mind the data to apply them. It's just another marketing strategy. The SUP world is, sadly, full of instant gurus. Buyer beware. The only real way to tell if a fin is right for you and your board is to try one. Personal preferences are so particular anyway: what I am convinced is best, and improves my performance, might be torture for you and ruin yours.

The LA/JR Aercor is my downwind fin of choice on my old Naish Glide V2. Compliments it perfectly, fixing the annoying hammock rock when it gets caught by a quartering wave that normally causes the Glide to broach.. .

That being said, I'm with DJ in that dolphin style fins are probably the best downwind fins for most boards.
It ain't over until the fat board sinks....

I am using the Aercor almost 4 years now and it is the best buy i have ever made for this sport. I have done many downwinders with both the M-14 and the Aercor and this combination works perfect. If you get used to it you will never go back to any other fin.

Ok, please explain to me how a fin creates "lift" as you claim, in flat water paddling, and what amount of force this "lift" typically amounts to in a SUP moving at 5 mph in still water and no wind.

If you are the real deal then you should easily be able to explain this claim- taken from your rant above - in a way that the average reader of this forum will understand. And then we can measure this for ourselves and see if your claim is right. I'll even pay full price for the fin myself. If your claim is correct, then I will make sure I say so in this forum perfectly clearly. However if I find your claim to be false or misleading, then I hope you will equally accept that I will also give details of that here, and that you will give me my money back.
